## Forms & parts of speech

ad recall · noun

Memory of having seen an ad.

"**Ad recall** lift came in strong - people not only saw the video, they remembered it two days later."

## Definition in plain terms

Ad recall is whether people remember having seen an advertisement. It measures the AD's memorability — distinct from BRAND RECALL, which is remembering the brand itself. The most common operational form is Meta's ESTIMATED AD RECALL LIFT — the estimated number of additional people who would remember seeing your ad if asked within two days of exposure, used as the headline metric for brand-awareness campaigns on Facebook and Instagram.

## The mechanics

Meta estimates ad recall lift by polling — showing a subset of exposed people a survey question ('Do you recall seeing an ad from [Brand] in the last two days?') and comparing their responses to a control group that was not exposed; the difference is the modeled lift, reported as an absolute number of people and as a cost per ad recall lift for efficiency comparison. The two-day window matters — it captures durable memory, not a fleeting impression. Ad recall is a higher bar than reach or views, because being delivered an ad is not the same as remembering it, and memory is what later turns into recognition and choice.

## When it matters

Ad recall matters for upper-funnel brand and video work, where the goal is to be remembered rather than to drive an immediate click — it is a more honest read of awareness creative than impressions or completed views, which only count delivery. It rewards distinctive, memorable creative over forgettable reach, and it pairs with AWARENESS LIFT and brand-lift studies as evidence that a campaign moved memory. The cautions are that it is a modeled estimate, not a census, and that recall is necessary but not sufficient — people can remember an ad without it changing what they think or buy, so read it alongside brand and outcome metrics.

**Worked example.** A brand runs a video awareness campaign and the dashboard shows millions of impressions and high completed-view rates - delivery metrics that cannot say whether anyone remembers the ad. It turns to estimated ad recall lift, which polls exposed and control groups and estimates that tens of thousands of additional people would recall the ad within two days. Comparing cost per ad recall lift across creatives, the team finds the distinctive, story-led video drives far more recall per dollar than the polished-but-forgettable one - so it shifts budget toward the memorable creative, optimizing for being remembered rather than merely delivered.

**Failure modes to watch.** Reading reach or completed views as memory (delivery is not recall); treating the modeled estimate as an exact census; assuming recall alone changes behavior (it is necessary, not sufficient); and confusing ad recall with brand recall, which measures memory of the brand, not the ad.

## Origin & history

\*Traced through advertising-measurement practice - no single coiner survives. Ad recall as a memorability measure is long-standing in survey-based ad research; the modern operational form is Meta's 'estimated ad recall lift', introduced with its brand-awareness objective, which models the additional people likely to remember an ad within two days from polling exposed versus control groups.
