## Forms & parts of speech

retail media · category (it defined)

Commerce-site advertising.

"Our **retail media** line is now half of Amazon spend — the shelf tax became a channel."

## What it is, in plain terms

Amazon Ads sells placement inside the purchase itself: Sponsored Products (the search-results listings that look like listings), Sponsored Brands (the banner above results), Sponsored Display, and the DSP extending Amazon's audiences off-site — plus streaming inventory via Prime Video. Its unfair advantage is the loop: Amazon sees the search, serves the ad, and rings the register, making it the rare platform that measures advertising to the actual sale.

## How it actually works

The auction is keyword- and product-targeted CPC at the sharpest intent moment in advertising — someone searching INSIDE a store. Craft realities: organic and paid interlock (ads drive sales velocity, velocity drives organic rank — the flywheel argument for launch spend), retail readiness gates everything (a weak listing wastes every click), and defensive buying is real (your brand terms, competitors' product pages). Measurement vocabulary is its own dialect — ACoS/ROAS per SKU, with incrementality the sophisticated question: ads on your own branded searches harvest demand you may already own. The DSP layer turns purchase history into off-site targeting no other platform can honestly claim.

## Where it fits

For brands selling on Amazon it isn't optional — page-one is bought now, and launch economics assume ad-driven velocity. For the industry it's the template: Amazon Ads built the RETAIL MEDIA category every retailer now copies (the fastest-growing line in advertising). Strategically it's pure capture at the point of decision — pair it with demand creation elsewhere, and read its beautiful closed-loop numbers with the one caveat the loop hides: it can't see the demand the other channels created.

**Worked example.** A kitchenware brand launches a new SKU with the flywheel play: two weeks of aggressive Sponsored Products on category keywords (accepting ugly ACoS as launch investment), listing pre-optimized — reviews seeded via the official program, images and copy retail-ready. Velocity triggers organic rank by week three; ad spend ratchets down as organic carries page one. Steady state: branded-term defense plus competitor-page conquesting, ACoS by SKU role (launch vs. harvest). The category page now effectively pays Amazon rent — but the SKU owns its shelf.

**Failure modes to watch.** Buying clicks for a listing that isn't retail-ready; reading branded-search ROAS as incremental; running one blended ACoS target across launch and harvest SKUs; and ignoring the organic-rank flywheel that justifies launch-phase losses.

## Origin & history

Amazon's sponsored placements grew from 2012-era 'Amazon Product Ads' experiments into the formalized Amazon Advertising (2018, later Amazon Ads) — the closed-loop model that made 'retail media' an industry category and Amazon digital advertising's third pillar beside Google and Meta.
