## Forms & parts of speech

Handley · proper noun

Writer; shorthand for human brand voice.

"Give the onboarding email the **Handley** treatment — shorter, warmer, person to person."

## Who she is, in plain terms

Ann Handley is the writer and marketer who claimed the title of the world's first Chief Content Officer (at MarketingProfs), co-founded ClickZ in the web's first generation, and wrote *Everybody Writes* (2014, fully rewritten 2022) — the style manual marketing actually read. Her biweekly newsletter *Total Annarchy* is itself the case study: a personal letter that out-engages most brand campaigns.

## The key ideas

Writing is a habit and a craft, not a gift — "show up and write" beats waiting for inspiration; the reader is the hero, so utility times inspiration times empathy is her content equation; ruthless revision ("the first draft is the down payment"); voice as the one asset competitors cannot copy; and email as the place where a brand sounds most like a person — her rule that the best newsletters feel written to one reader, not blasted to a list.

## Why she still matters

As AI floods every channel with competent average prose, her thesis got sharper — distinctly human voice is now the scarcest asset in content. Teams that read her stop publishing "content" and start publishing writing, and the difference shows up in reply rates, retention, and the rare unsubscribe note that says "keep going."

**Worked example.** A SaaS company's newsletter opens at 19% with corporate boilerplate. The Handley rewrite gives it a named human sender, a first line that talks to one reader about one specific thing, half the word count after revision, and a P.S. with personality. Opens climb past 30% and replies appear — actual replies — because the email finally reads like somebody wrote it.

**Failure modes to watch.** Mistaking output volume for content strategy; sanding every trace of personality off in review until the brand sounds like everyone; and quoting 'everybody writes' while giving nobody the time to revise.
