## Forms & parts of speech

assist · noun (attribution sense)

A contributing non-final touch.

"Social gets few last-click wins but tons of **assists** — it's a discovery channel, not a closer."

## Definition in plain terms

An assisted conversion is a conversion in which a channel played a role somewhere along the path but was NOT the final interaction before the purchase. In last-click attribution, only that final touch gets credit — so a channel that consistently introduces and warms prospects (display, social, content) but rarely delivers the closing click appears worthless, despite doing essential work. Assisted-conversion reporting reveals that hidden contribution by counting the touches that helped, not just the one that closed.

## The mechanics

Analytics platforms surface this through assist metrics and path reports: a channel's 'assists' (times it appeared in a converting path without being last), its assist-to-last-click ratio (high ratio = a discovery/introducer channel; low ratio = a closer), and full conversion-path visualizations. The insight reshapes channel valuation: upper-funnel channels are systematically undervalued by last-click and systematically revealed by assist data. The honest caveats: assisted-conversion data still lives inside the platform's tracking (subject to the same cookie/window limits), it shows correlation in the path not proven causation, and it can over-credit channels that merely appear in paths without truly influencing — which is why it informs rather than replaces incrementality testing. But as a corrective to last-click's tunnel vision, it's essential.

## When it matters

Assisted conversions matter most when allocating budget across a multi-touch journey — they're the antidote to last-click attribution defunding the discovery and consideration channels that feed the closers. Reading a channel's assist ratio tells you its ROLE (introducer vs. closer) and prevents the classic error of cutting a 'low-ROAS' upper-funnel channel that was actually originating much of the pipeline the closer harvested. It's a step up from last-click toward honest multi-touch thinking — best paired with incrementality to confirm the influence is real, not just present in the path.

**Worked example.** A team about to cut paid social for a weak last-click ROAS checks the assisted-conversion report first — and reverses course: social rarely gets the final click but appears in 40% of converting paths as the FIRST touch, with a high assist-to-last-click ratio that marks it as the brand's primary discovery channel. Last-click had been crediting the closing branded-search click for demand that social originated. The budget stays, reframed: social is funded and measured as a top-of-funnel introducer, search as the harvester — and a geo holdout later confirms social's incremental contribution is real, not just path-present.

**Failure modes to watch.** Reading last-click ROAS as a channel's true value; cutting upper-funnel channels that show as assists; treating path presence as proven causation; and stopping at assisted-conversion data without an incrementality check to confirm real influence.

## Origin & history

\*This term has no verifiable inventor - what follows is the best reconstruction from its trade usage. The assisted-conversion concept standardized with multi-touch attribution reporting in web analytics — Google Analytics introduced Multi-Channel Funnels and assisted-conversion reports in 2011, giving marketers a built-in corrective to last-click's tunnel vision.

## Common questions

What is an assisted conversion?
: A conversion where a channel contributed an earlier touchpoint but wasn't the final interaction before converting.

Why do assisted conversions matter?
: They reveal the upper-funnel discovery channels that last-click attribution ignores by crediting only the closing touch.

What is an assist ratio?
: A channel's assists relative to its last-click conversions — high means an introducer/discovery channel, low means a closer.
