Output
: One agreed, decision-ready view

## Forms & parts of speech

reconcile · verb

To align conflicting measurement sources.

"We spend the first day of every month on attribution **reconciliation** - the platforms, GA, and the model never match."

## Definition in plain terms

Attribution reconciliation is the work of making the conflicting numbers from different measurement sources — ad platforms each claiming credit, web analytics, multi-touch models, media-mix models, incrementality tests — agree into one coherent, decision-ready view. Every source counts conversions differently, so their totals never match; reconciliation explains WHY they differ and produces a single picture the team can actually act on.

## The mechanics

Sources disagree for structural reasons — different ATTRIBUTION WINDOWS, different methods (last-click vs data-driven vs modeled), self-reported platform numbers that each over-claim, different deduplication, and identity/signal gaps. Reconciliation maps these differences (this platform uses a 7-day click window and counts view-through; analytics uses last non-direct click), removes double-counting where sources overlap, and triangulates toward a defensible view — often anchoring on the most causal evidence (incrementality, MMM) and using platform and analytics numbers for granular steering. The goal is not to force the numbers to match, but to understand the differences well enough to decide confidently.

## When it matters

Reconciliation matters whenever budget decisions rest on measurement, which is always — if the ad platforms collectively claim more conversions than the business actually had (they routinely do), naive trust over-credits paid channels and misallocates spend. It is the discipline that keeps the ATTRIBUTION GAP from quietly steering money the wrong way. The mature practice triangulates rather than crowns one source as truth, and accepts that a perfectly reconciled single number is less the goal than a clear, agreed understanding of what each source means and which to trust for which decision.

**Worked example.** A marketing team opens its monthly review to find the ad platforms collectively claiming 40% more conversions than the company actually recorded, while web analytics shows a third number and the media-mix model a fourth. Rather than pick a favorite, they reconcile — documenting each source's window, method, and dedup, removing overlap, and anchoring on the incrementality and model evidence for budget calls while using platform numbers for in-channel optimization. The output is one agreed view the team trusts enough to move budget on, and a shared understanding that the platforms over-claim by design — so their raw totals never again drive allocation unchecked.

**Failure modes to watch.** Trusting self-reported platform totals that over-claim by design; forcing numbers to match instead of understanding why they differ; double-counting overlapping sources; and reconciling once instead of building a repeatable, documented method.

## Origin & history

\*Traced through analytics and measurement practice - no single coiner survives. Attribution reconciliation became a named, recurring task as marketers ran multiple overlapping measurement systems (platform reporting, analytics, multi-touch models, MMM, incrementality) whose totals never agree; it formalizes the work of aligning them into one decision-ready view.

## Common questions

What is attribution reconciliation?
: The process of aligning conflicting results from different measurement sources — ad platforms, analytics, models, experiments — into one coherent, decision-ready view.

Why do attribution sources disagree?
: Different attribution windows, methods, deduplication, and self-reported over-claiming, plus identity and signal gaps, mean every source counts conversions differently.

How do you reconcile attribution?
: Map each source's rules, remove overlap, anchor on the most causal evidence (incrementality, MMM) for budget calls, and use platform numbers for granular steering.
