## Forms & parts of speech

brand personality · noun

A brand's human character.

"The **brand personality** was 'rugged and dependable' - and every choice, from voice to imagery, reinforced it."

## Definition in plain terms

Brand personality is the set of human characteristics and traits that consumers associate with a brand — whether it comes across as sincere, exciting, competent, sophisticated, or rugged. It gives a brand a recognizable character, so people relate to it the way they relate to a person, and choose brands whose personality fits how they see themselves or want to be seen. It is distinct from product attributes: two brands with identical products can have very different personalities.

## The mechanics

The classic framework is Jennifer Aaker's, set out in her 1997 paper 'Dimensions of Brand Personality' (Journal of Marketing Research), which identified five dimensions — Sincerity, Excitement, Competence, Sophistication, and Ruggedness — echoing the 'Big Five' of human personality. A brand expresses its personality through every signal it sends: tone of voice, visual identity, imagery, spokespeople, and the experiences it creates. Personality matters because it drives emotional connection and differentiation in categories where products are similar, and because a consistent, distinctive personality makes a brand feel coherent and memorable. The work is to choose a personality that fits the brand's positioning and audience, then express it consistently so it actually registers.

## When it matters

Brand personality matters most in categories where functional differences are small and choice is driven by identity and feeling, and wherever a brand wants an emotional rather than purely rational relationship. It is the layer that makes a brand relatable and distinctive. The discipline is to define the personality deliberately (not let it form by accident), to anchor it in the brand's positioning and audience rather than chasing whatever is fashionable, and to express it consistently across every touchpoint — because a personality stated in a brand book but contradicted in the actual experience never takes hold in consumers' minds.

**Worked example.** A challenger brand has good products but feels generic, and customers struggle to describe it. Using Aaker's five dimensions, the team defines a deliberate personality — excitement and competence, energetic but credible — that fits its young, ambitious audience and its positioning. Then it makes the personality real: a bolder voice, more dynamic imagery, and experiences that feel confident rather than cautious, applied consistently everywhere. Over time customers start describing the brand in those very terms, and it builds the emotional connection and distinctiveness it lacked — because the personality was chosen to fit and then expressed consistently, rather than left to form by accident.

**Failure modes to watch.** Letting a personality form by accident instead of defining it; choosing traits that chase fashion rather than fit the positioning and audience; stating a personality in a brand book but contradicting it in the real experience; and copying a competitor's character instead of owning a distinctive one.

## Origin & history

Brand personality was given its enduring framework by marketing scholar Jennifer L. Aaker in her 1997 article "Dimensions of Brand Personality" (Journal of Marketing Research, 34(3), 347-356), which empirically derived five dimensions — sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication, and ruggedness — and the validated scale to measure them, paralleling the Big Five model of human personality.
