## Forms & parts of speech

brand resonance · noun

The deepest brand relationship.

"At true **brand resonance**, customers defend the brand, buy repeatedly, and bring others in."

## Definition in plain terms

Brand resonance is the deepest, most valuable level of the relationship between a brand and its customers — the top of Kevin Lane Keller's Customer-Based Brand Equity (CBBE) pyramid. At resonance, customers are not just aware of or positive toward the brand; they feel an active, loyal attachment to it, identify with it, and often connect with other customers around it. It is the difference between a brand people will buy and a brand people belong to.

## The mechanics

Keller's CBBE pyramid builds in four tiers. The base is SALIENCE — who are you? — deep, broad brand awareness. Next is meaning, split between performance (what the brand does) and imagery (what it stands for). Above that sits response, split between judgments (rational evaluation) and feelings (emotional reaction). At the apex is resonance — the relationship — which Keller breaks into behavioral loyalty (repeat purchase), attitudinal attachment ('I love this brand'), sense of community, and active engagement (advocacy, participation). A brand reaches resonance only after the lower tiers are genuinely in place; you cannot manufacture loyalty without first being salient, meaningful, and well-judged.

## When it matters

Brand resonance matters most as the strategic destination of brand-building — the level that produces durable competitive advantage, because resonant customers buy repeatedly, resist competitors and price pressure, and recruit others, lowering acquisition cost and stabilizing revenue. It is also a diagnostic: the pyramid shows where a brand's relationship breaks down, so investment can target the missing tier rather than chasing loyalty directly. The discipline is to build the foundation honestly — salience, meaning, positive response — rather than buy the appearance of resonance, which cannot be faked into existence at the top while the lower levels are hollow.

**Worked example.** A brand has strong awareness and good reviews but flat loyalty — customers buy once and drift to whoever is cheaper next time. Mapping it against Keller's pyramid locates the break: salience and meaning are solid and judgments are positive, but there is no emotional attachment or community holding people in. Instead of chasing loyalty with discounts, the brand invests in the feelings and relationship tiers — a clearer point of view, a community customers want to belong to, and genuine engagement. Over time repeat purchase, advocacy, and resistance to competitors rise together, because the brand built resonance on a real foundation rather than trying to buy loyalty at the top.

**Failure modes to watch.** Chasing loyalty directly while the lower pyramid tiers (salience, meaning, response) are weak; mistaking satisfaction or positive judgments for resonance; trying to buy attachment with discounts instead of building it; and failing to diagnose which tier is missing before investing.

## Origin & history

Brand resonance is the apex tier of the Customer-Based Brand Equity (CBBE) pyramid developed by marketing scholar Kevin Lane Keller, whose foundational article "Conceptualizing, Measuring, and Managing Customer-Based Brand Equity" appeared in the *Journal of Marketing* in 1993 and was elaborated in his textbook *Strategic Brand Management*. Keller defined resonance as the depth of the psychological bond customers have with a brand and the level of activity that loyalty generates.
