## Forms & parts of speech

caption · noun

Media's accompanying text.

"The video was great with sound - the **caption** was the only version most of the feed ever saw."

## Definition in plain terms

A caption is the text that accompanies media — and in marketing it means two related things. On social posts, the caption is the written copy alongside the image or video: the hook, context, and call-to-action. On video, captions are the on-screen text rendering the spoken words (and, in closed-caption form, sounds) — accessibility infrastructure that became performance infrastructure when feeds went sound-off. Both meanings share one job: carrying the message when the media cannot carry it alone.

## The mechanics

The video case is the one with numbers attached. Feed video autoplays muted on most platforms, and the audience largely leaves it that way — industry studies have put sound-off viewing as high as 85% of Facebook video — so the spoken script literally does not reach most viewers. Facebook's own internal tests found captioned video ads lift average view time around 12%, and captions are simultaneously an accessibility obligation and an SEO-adjacent asset (caption files make video content machine-readable). The craft: captions burned into the creative (open captions) survive every platform's settings; styling — size, contrast, placement clear of UI overlays — decides phone-screen legibility; and good video copywriting now assumes the muted viewer, designing the first three seconds to hook without audio (a discipline CREATIVE BRIEF writers increasingly specify). The social-post caption has its own physics: platforms truncate after a line or two behind 'more,' so the first words carry the hook; length norms differ by platform (a TikTok caption is not a LinkedIn post); and the caption is where the call-to-action, mention, and hashtag mechanics live. Across both meanings the failure is the same — treating the text as an afterthought to the visual, when for most of the audience the text is the experience.

## When it matters

Captions matter wherever video meets a feed — which is most paid and organic social — because the muted majority decides the campaign's economics. They matter doubly for accessibility compliance and for any audience watching in public, at work, or in bed. The discipline is to produce captions as creative, not compliance: burn them in, style them for thumb-distance legibility, write the sound-off version first, and hold social-post captions to the same first-line standard as ad headlines — the algorithm shows the visual, but the caption closes.

**Worked example.** A fitness-app brand runs a video ad with a charismatic trainer whose voiceover carries the entire pitch - and watches three-second view rates underperform the category. The diagnosis is silence: virtually the whole feed audience plays it muted, receiving ninety seconds of an enthusiastic stranger gesturing. The recut assumes the muted viewer. Open captions in high-contrast type carry the hook in the first two seconds ('Your gym hates this app'), key claims appear as styled on-screen text synchronized to the trainer's beats, and the social caption's first line restates the offer before the fold instead of after it. Same footage, same targeting: view time rises in line with the captioned-video research, completion rate doubles, and cost per install drops 23%. The brand adds a permanent line to its creative briefs - every video must work with the sound off, because that is how it will mostly be watched.

**Failure modes to watch.** Voiceover-dependent video shipped into muted feeds; captions left to platform auto-captioning errors on brand-critical claims; styling illegible at phone distance or hidden behind interface overlays; social captions that bury the hook below the truncation fold; and treating caption files as compliance paperwork instead of creative surface.

## Origin & history

'Caption' came to media from print — the heading or text accompanying an illustration, from the Latin captio — and television gave it the closed-captioning sense when accessibility broadcasting began in the 1970s (the first US closed-captioned broadcasts aired in 1980). Social feeds then fused both meanings into marketing craft: post text and on-screen text, each doing the talking for silent media.

## Common questions

What is a caption in marketing?
: Two things — the written copy accompanying a social post, and the on-screen text carrying a video's spoken words; both carry the message when the media can't do it alone.

Why do captions matter for video ads?
: Most feed video plays with sound off — studies have put it as high as 85% on Facebook — and Facebook's tests found captions lift view time about 12%, so the caption is the script most viewers receive.

Should captions be burned into the video?
: For ads, usually yes — open captions survive every platform setting and let you style for legibility; auto-captions risk errors on the claims that matter most.
