## Forms & parts of speech

cause marketing · noun

Commerce tied to a cause.

"The **cause marketing** campaign worked because the brand had funded the cause for years before asking customers to join."

## Definition in plain terms

Cause marketing links a brand's commercial activity to a social or charitable cause — classically by tying purchases to donations ('one dollar from every sale'), and more broadly through cause-branded campaigns, co-ventures with nonprofits, and buy-one-give-one models. The form was named and proven in one campaign: in 1983, American Express marketing chief Jerry Welsh coined 'cause-related marketing' for a program donating a penny per transaction and a dollar per new card toward restoring the Statue of Liberty. Card use rose 28%, applications jumped 45%, and the statue got $1.7 million — commerce and cause, each moving the other.

## The mechanics

The mechanism is value alignment: customers who feel a purchase does good prefer it at the margin, and the brand borrows the cause's emotional meaning while the cause borrows the brand's reach and budget. What separates campaigns that build brands from campaigns that generate backlash is mostly three variables. Fit — the cause should connect plausibly to the brand's business or audience (an outdoor brand and public lands make sense together; arbitrary pairings read as costume). Commitment — donation mechanics must be transparent and substantial (capped micro-donations dressed in big imagery invite the 'purpose-washing' charge, and disclosure rules in many jurisdictions require clarity on what actually gets given). Duration — sustained programs compound trust while one-off November campaigns read as seasonal opportunism; the brands cited for this work (Patagonia's environmental programs, TOMS' giving model, Dove's long-running self-esteem platform) treated the cause as policy, not promotion. The form sits inside the wider BRAND PURPOSE conversation and shares its risk profile: consumers increasingly verify claims, and the gap between campaign and conduct is where reputations go to die. Done honestly, cause marketing also has measurable commercial mechanics — choice-share lift at parity price points, earned media, employee pride — which deserve the same measurement rigor as any campaign.

## When it matters

Cause marketing matters when a brand genuinely invests in something its audience cares about and wants the investment to do brand work too — which is legitimate, provided the giving is real and the telling is honest. It suits brands with authentic standing on the cause and patience for sustained programs; it punishes brands hunting a quarterly halo. The discipline is fit before creativity, transparency in the mechanics (what is donated, capped how, verified by whom), duration over stunts, and a hard internal test before launch: if the campaign were audited line by line against the brand's actual conduct, would the story survive? If not, fix the conduct first — the marketing will keep.

**Worked example.** A regional grocery chain wants a holiday giving campaign and nearly ships a vague 'we support local families' donation round-up. The rebuild starts with fit and proof: the chain already donates unsold food daily to area food banks - real conduct, never told. The campaign makes that the spine. Every receipt shows the running total of meals the customer's store funded this year, a December match doubles register round-ups with the cap published, and the food bank co-signs the messaging with quarterly donation figures audited and posted. Round-up participation triples the category norm, the campaign earns local press no ad budget would buy, and brand-tracker trust scores move for the first time in years - because shoppers could verify every claim at the shelf, the register, and the food bank's own site. The campaign worked in exact proportion to how true it was.

**Failure modes to watch.** Arbitrary brand-cause pairings that read as costume; capped micro-donations behind big-hearted imagery; one-off seasonal campaigns posing as commitment; opaque mechanics that invite purpose-washing charges and regulatory attention; and campaigns louder than the conduct behind them, which audiences now verify.

## Origin & history

'Cause-related marketing' was coined by Jerry Welsh, American Express's worldwide marketing chief, for the 1983 campaign funding the Statue of Liberty's restoration — a penny per transaction, a dollar per new card. AmEx registered the phrase but let it pass into general use, and the campaign's results (28% usage lift, $1.7 million raised) made the form a permanent part of brand practice.
