## Forms & parts of speech

Hopkins · proper noun

Copywriter; by extension his test-everything school.

"Run it like **Hopkins** would — two versions, tracked codes, let the returns decide."

## Who he was, in plain terms

Claude Hopkins was an American advertising pioneer who treated copy as a measurable instrument: keyed coupons told him exactly which ad, headline, and offer pulled. He made Pepsodent a habit (popularizing tooth-brushing itself), built Schlitz's "purity" story from a brewery tour, and set down his method in *Scientific Advertising* (1923).

## The key ideas

Advertising is salesmanship in print, accountable to results; test one variable at a time with tracked responses; specifics persuade ("germs" was vague — the "film on teeth" was a campaign); claims everyone could make become yours if you say them first; and curiosity plus self-interest move people, not cleverness. He measured a century before the click existed.

## Why he still matters

Every A/B test, tracked link, and direct-response funnel runs on Hopkins' logic with better plumbing. Ogilvy ordered every new hire to read *Scientific Advertising* seven times — "nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book." The instruments changed; the epistemology didn't.

**Worked example.** A growth team debates two landing pages on taste. The Hopkins move: ship both with tracked sources, one variable apart, and let response decide — opinions retire, returns rule. The habit compounds into a testing culture, which is exactly what the man was selling in 1923 for the price of a coupon.

**Failure modes to watch.** Testing trivia while the offer is the problem; celebrating cleverness over response; and forgetting his other lesson — that specifics and preemptive claims do the persuading before any test runs.
