: Predictive CLV, cohort math

## Forms & parts of speech

customer centricity · noun (the book's definition)

Strategy aligned to high-CLV segments.

"That's not **customer centricity** — that's customer friendliness. Fader means the math."

## What the book says

*Customer Centricity* attacks the slogan version of its own title: being nice to everyone is customer FRIENDLINESS, and it's strategy-free. Fader's customer centricity is harder — measure each customer's probable lifetime value, discover the radical skew (a small slice funds the business), and align acquisition, retention, product, and service tiers around the valuable segments while serving the rest efficiently. Paradoxically, this is also the defense of brand and scale done right: know which customers compound and organize around them.

## The ideas people quote

'Not all customers deserve your best efforts' — the book's heresy and thesis; the Pareto reality of CLV skew; celebrity CEO cases reread through cohort math (Apple as product-centric success, Nordstrom as friendliness mistaken for centricity); and the operational sequence — measure CLV predictively, segment by future value, then differentiate investment.

## How to read it now

It's the strategic preface to the whole CLV-operations stack — predictive models, value-based bidding, tiered service. The discipline it demands has only gotten cheaper to implement (his Zodiac became Nike's in-house engine; Theta values companies this way). Read it with one ethical footnote in hand: differentiated INVESTMENT is strategy; differentiated dignity is brand suicide.

**Worked example.** A subscription retailer offers identical perks to all members and bleeds margin. The Fader rebuild fits predictive CLV to purchase histories: 14% of members drive 61% of projected value. Perks tier accordingly, win-back budgets chase only resurrectable high-value cohorts, acquisition bids on lookalikes of the top decile, and the service floor stays decent for everyone. A year later revenue is flat, margin is up nine points — the strategy was knowing whom to fight for.

**Failure modes to watch.** Confusing customer friendliness with customer centricity; computing one blended LTV that hides the skew; and over-serving everyone equally — the expensive egalitarianism the book exists to end.

Published 2012 as one of Wharton Digital Press's launch titles — deliberately short ('a one-flight read') to carry Fader's classroom argument to executives. It grew from his Wharton MBA course and the buy-till-you-die modeling lineage he built with Bruce Hardie.
