## Forms & parts of speech

explainer video · noun

The make-it-click video.

"The **explainer video** did what three paragraphs couldn't - visitors finally understood what the product was."

## Definition in plain terms

An explainer video is a short video — the convention says 60 to 90 seconds — whose single job is making a product, service, or concept make sense. It is comprehension's format: the homepage hero that answers 'what is this?', the onboarding clip that compresses the manual, the ad cut that earns the click by making the value obvious. Dropbox's famous early explainer (the 2009-era demo video credited with driving its waitlist surge) made the format a startup ritual; the discipline that survives the ritual is the one job.

## The mechanics

The structure is nearly invariant because it works: the problem named in the viewer's terms (the first ten seconds earn the next eighty — and the CAPTION entry's sound-off rules apply in full wherever the video meets a feed), the product shown solving it (shown, not listed — demonstration beats enumeration), a proof beat (the number, the logo wall, the one testimonial), and a single ask. The formats trade on cost and fit: animation explains abstractions and scales revisions cheaply, screen-capture demos suit software whose interface is the story, live action carries trust for services and physical products — and the CREATIVE-BRIEF discipline governs all of them, because explainer failures are almost always brief failures: five messages where one belonged (the single-minded-proposition rule, video edition), insider vocabulary the BUYER-PERSONA wouldn't use, and runtime creep as stakeholders each add a feature. Placement decides measurement: homepage explainers answer to comprehension and conversion (the A/B test against the no-video control, plus engagement curves showing where viewers bail — the drop-off timestamp is the edit note), ad cuts answer to the platform's metrics with the first three seconds re-weighted, onboarding clips answer to ACTIVATION movement. The standing production trap is polish over clarity — a beautiful 3-minute brand film wearing an explainer's slot, doing neither job.

## When it matters

Explainer videos matter wherever comprehension is the conversion barrier — novel products, abstract services, anything whose category the visitor doesn't yet have a shelf for. They matter most at the funnel's comprehension gates: homepage heroes, app-store pages, onboarding's first minute, and the cold-traffic ads where 'what is this?' decides everything. The discipline is one message, the structure honored, sound-off design assumed, drop-off curves read as edit notes, and the test against control that proves the video earns its slot.

**Worked example.** A B2B data-tool startup's homepage converts at 1.1% and visitor recordings show the diagnosis: pogo-sticking between tabs, nobody sure what the product does. The explainer project starts with the brief, not the storyboard - one viewer (the persona's data-team lead), one message ('your pipelines, monitored without writing checks'), one ask (the demo) - and a 75-second screen-capture-plus-motion format that shows a pipeline failure caught in real time. Sound-off design is assumed: open captions, the problem visible by second eight. The A/B against the no-video control settles its slot: +34% demo requests, with the engagement curve's dip at second 50 driving one edit (the second proof point cut; the video got shorter and better). The sequel lives in onboarding, where the same 'shown, not listed' rule moves activation four points. The homepage never got prettier - it got comprehensible.

**Failure modes to watch.** Five messages where the brief demanded one; runtime creep as every stakeholder adds a feature; sound-on design shipped into muted feeds; polish over clarity - brand films wearing explainer slots; drop-off curves never read as edit notes; and no control test, leaving the video's slot a matter of taste.

## Origin & history

The explainer's startup-era legend is Dropbox's 2009 demo video — a screencast credited with surging its waitlist — which made the 90-second homepage explainer a ritual; the format's craft consolidated through the animation-studio boom that followed, and the sound-off feed era rewrote its first ten seconds.

## Common questions

What is an explainer video?
: A short video — typically 60-90 seconds — with one job: making a product or concept click, structured problem → product shown solving it → proof → single ask.

What format should an explainer use?
: Animation for abstractions, screen capture for software whose interface is the story, live action for trust-led services — chosen by the brief's one message, not the studio's reel.

How are explainer videos measured?
: By placement — homepage versions A/B-tested against no-video controls with drop-off curves as edit notes; ad cuts on platform metrics with the first seconds re-weighted; onboarding clips on activation.
