## Forms & parts of speech

Magic Quadrant · proper noun

Its two-axis vendor map.

"We moved up in the **Magic Quadrant** — sales will ride that for a year."

## What it is

Gartner is the world's largest technology research and advisory firm — founded by former Wall Street analyst Gideon Gartner in 1979 — selling research subscriptions, analyst access, and conferences to IT and business leaders. Its signature artifacts run the industry's vocabulary: the Magic Quadrant (vendors mapped on ability to execute versus completeness of vision), the Hype Cycle (technologies on the journey from trigger to productivity), and a forecast machine enterprises budget against. It absorbed CEB in 2017 and Scott Galloway's L2 the same year.

## Why marketers rely on it

In enterprise buying, Gartner placement IS distribution — shortlists get built from quadrants, and a Leaders-square berth moves pipeline like nothing a marketing team does directly. For marketers the relationship is double: as buyers, its research de-risks martech choices; as vendors, analyst relations (briefings, references, inquiry presence) is a marketing channel with its own craft.

## How to use it well

Read quadrants as structured opinion with disclosed methodology, not scripture — criteria favor breadth and viability, which systematically flatters incumbents over sharp specialists. Use Hype Cycles to time messaging (selling into the trough needs proof, not vision), the Peer Insights reviews as a reality check, and remember the business model: vendors fund much of the ecosystem they're rated inside.

**Worked example.** A martech vendor lands in the Niche Players square and panics. The Gartner-literate response: read the criteria (the score weights global support and breadth the product deliberately lacks), then market WITH the placement — 'built for mid-market, rated exactly as focused as we are' — while analyst relations feeds the next cycle's reference customers. Two years later it moves quadrants on real expansion, not spin. The square was data about strategy fit, not a verdict on quality.

**Failure modes to watch.** Treating quadrant position as product quality; selling vision into a trough-of-disillusionment market that needs proof; and skipping analyst relations entirely while competitors brief quarterly.

## Origin & history

Gideon Gartner — a top-ranked Wall Street tech analyst — founded it in 1979 to sell research directly rather than through brokerage; the Magic Quadrant emerged in the 1980s as an internal shorthand that became the industry's most consequential chart. The Hype Cycle followed in 1995, coined by analyst Jackie Fenn.
