## Forms & parts of speech

hook · noun (from the book)

One full habit loop.

"Where's the **hook**? This app has features but no loop."

## What the book says

*Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products* distills consumer psychology into a four-phase loop. Trigger — external at first (a notification), internal at maturity (boredom, loneliness, FOMO); Action — the simplest behavior anticipating reward (Fogg's B=MAT underneath); Variable Reward — the slot-machine core, in three flavors (tribe: social validation; hunt: material/information; self: mastery and completion); Investment — the user puts something in (content, followers, data) that loads the next trigger and makes leaving costlier. Habits form when the loop cycles enough that internal triggers take over.

## The ideas people quote

Internal triggers as the endgame — the product becomes the default response to an emotion; variability as the engagement engine (predictable rewards extinguish); stored value — every playlist and streak is switching-cost by design; the Manipulation Matrix — his ethics test (do you use it yourself? does it materially improve users' lives?); and the five-why dig to the emotional root of usage.

## How to read it now

Read it twice — as a builder (retention IS a habit problem; most 'engagement features' fail because they bolt rewards onto products with no internal trigger) and as the document of a debate: Eyal himself wrote *Indistractable* five years later, partly answering critics who read Hooked as the attention economy's instruction manual. The honest practitioner's line: build hooks where the habit serves the user; the Manipulation Matrix is the conscience clause, not décor.

**Worked example.** A meditation app has solid content and 90% thirty-day churn. The Hooked rebuild: the internal trigger is workday stress, so a one-tap 'SOS calm' session becomes the action; variable reward mixes streaks (self) with rotating teacher content (hunt); investment is a mood journal whose week-over-week chart users won't abandon. Notifications shift from generic to trigger-timed (calendar gaps after meetings). Day-30 retention triples — the app attached itself to the emotion, which is what habit means.

**Failure modes to watch.** Bolting points and streaks onto a product with no internal trigger; maximizing the loop where the user's interest and the product's diverge — the matrix quadrant Eyal calls the dealer; and chasing daily actives in a product whose honest cadence is weekly.
