## Forms & parts of speech

brand gap · phrase (from the book)

The strategy-creativity divide.

"Classic **brand gap** — brilliant strategy deck, generic execution nobody feels."

## What the book says

*The Brand Gap* opens with the definition the industry adopted: a brand is not a logo, an identity system, or a product — it is a PERSON'S GUT FEELING about a product, service, or company, because brands are defined by individuals, not companies. The gap of the title is organizational: strategists who can't feel and creatives who can't argue, producing brands that are either smart-but-dead or beautiful-but-empty. His bridge is five disciplines — differentiate (answer who are you, what do you do, why does it matter), collaborate, innovate, validate, and cultivate.

## The ideas people quote

'A brand is a person's gut feeling…' — probably the most-slided definition in branding; the three questions of differentiation; 'zag' — when everybody zigs, zag (his follow-up book's whole thesis); the onliness statement ('our brand is the ONLY \_\_\_ that \_\_\_'); and charisma defined — any brand for which people believe there's no substitute.

## How to read it now

It remains the fastest cure for logo-equals-brand thinking and the cleanest brief for design-strategy collaboration — written as a 'whiteboard overview' you can read in an hour and argue about for a decade. Pair its perception-first definition with Romaniuk's measurement school: Neumeier tells you the brand lives in their gut; Ehrenberg-Bass tells you how to audit what's actually in there.

**Worked example.** A fintech rebrand kicks off as a logo project. The Neumeier intervention starts with the onliness test instead — 'the only banking app that \_\_\_' — and the room can't finish the sentence, which IS the finding: a design problem was hiding a differentiation problem. Strategy and design then work as one team (collaborate), the zag emerges (the only bank app with no fees AND no fine print, validated with real users), and the eventual identity has something true to dramatize. The logo came last, as it should have.

**Failure modes to watch.** Commissioning design to fix a differentiation problem; writing an onliness statement no customer would recognize; and letting strategy and creative work in sequence instead of in a room — the gap itself.

## Origin & history

Neumeier — a Silicon Valley brand designer for Apple, Adobe, and HP — wrote it as a deliberately short 'whiteboard overview' after years watching strategy decks and design comps talk past each other. New Riders published it 2003; the slide-style format became its own genre.
