**Honest note**

DoorDash does not break out advertising revenue specifically in its financial reporting; the platform is one component of broader DoorDash marketplace revenue. The ROAS figure (~$6 per $1 spent) is from DoorDash's own ad-platform marketing materials and may reflect favorable averages rather than representative results for all advertisers. The retail-media category is competitive (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Instacart, Uber all operate retail-media networks); DoorDash's specific position depends on its restaurant-and-CPG advertiser relationships and its consumer-data assets. The Symbiosys acquisition is operationally significant for the retail-media expansion but the post-acquisition revenue contribution has not been publicly disclosed.

## Where DoorDash was before the advertising platform

DoorDash was founded in 2013 by Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore as a food-delivery marketplace. The product expanded through 2014-2020 from food-only delivery into grocery (DashMart, Caviar restaurants, partnerships with Walmart and Aldi), convenience (7-Eleven, Wawa, Walgreens), and broader same-day local commerce. The December 2020 IPO valued DoorDash at approximately $39 billion. Through 2020-2022 DoorDash continued expanding the marketplace breadth and the DashPass subscription program.

The advertising opportunity inside DoorDash had been operating through direct-sales relationships with major brands but had not yet been built into a self-serve platform that restaurants and smaller advertisers could use. The strategic argument for building advertising was clear: DoorDash had become a meaningful demand-aggregation channel for restaurants and CPG brands, with consumer-behavior data (purchase frequency, basket composition, time-of-day patterns, geographic distribution) that supported targeted advertising. Other marketplaces (Amazon, Instacart, Uber Eats, Walmart) had been building retail-media networks; DoorDash needed to participate to monetise its demand-side scale.

## The 2023 self-serve platform launch and 2024 Symbiosys acquisition

In 2023 DoorDash announced a suite of advertising offerings with self-serve capabilities. The launch included Sponsored Listings (a pay-per-confirmed-order format where restaurants pay for prime placement in app search results and category pages), homepage banner ads (paid placements on the DoorDash homepage), and Offers Hub promotions (a dedicated discount-and-promotion section). The self-serve aspect was strategically important: restaurants could create campaigns through the Merchant Portal without prior advertising experience or direct DoorDash sales contact, expanding the addressable advertiser pool from major brands only to all DoorDash merchants.

In 2024 DoorDash acquired Symbiosys, an adtech firm specialising in retail-media programmatic and performance-marketing technology. The acquisition expanded DoorDash's retail-media capabilities beyond the in-app placements to broader programmatic advertising across DoorDash and partner properties. The strategic logic: retail-media networks at scale require both demand-side scale (DoorDash had this) and adtech-infrastructure depth (Symbiosys provided this). The combined platform competes more directly with Amazon Advertising and other established retail-media networks.

## The advertiser-side economics

The reported ROAS for restaurants advertising on DoorDash is approximately $6 per $1 spent on average over one month. More than 45 percent of orders generated from DoorDash ads come from new customers (versus repeat customers). The new-customer share is strategically significant for restaurants: paid ad spend that drives existing-customer orders is largely cannibalising organic traffic, while paid ad spend that drives new-customer orders adds customer-acquisition value beyond the immediate order revenue.

For CPG brands (food manufacturers, beverage companies, household-goods producers selling through DashMart and grocery integration), the DoorDash advertising platform offers reach to high-intent shoppers at moment of purchase — an audience that traditional TV or digital advertising cannot target as precisely. The CPG-on-DoorDash advertising opportunity is structurally similar to the Amazon Advertising opportunity that has produced $40-plus billion in annual Amazon ad revenue. DoorDash is much smaller than Amazon in absolute scale but specializes in food-and-CPG advertiser relationships at higher engagement per impression than broader-category retail media.

## How RGM thinks about retail-media network expansion

When clients ask about retail-media monetisation, the DoorDash advertising platform case is a useful current example of how a marketplace can extend into retail-media. Three structural lessons. First, the retail-media opportunity is structurally tied to demand-side scale. DoorDash advertising works because DoorDash has substantial consumer demand to monetise; smaller marketplaces face structural difficulty matching the ROAS that scale produces. Second, the self-serve aspect dramatically expands the addressable advertiser pool. Direct-sales advertising relationships work for major brands but exclude the small-and-mid-merchant majority who cannot afford direct-sales engagement. Third, the adtech-infrastructure depth (acquired via Symbiosys) is operationally important for the long-term retail-media position. Marketplaces with demand-side scale but limited adtech depth cannot easily compete against Amazon and other retail-media leaders without infrastructure investment.

The pattern is hard to copy in marketplaces without comparable scale or specialised advertiser relationships. Many delivery and marketplace platforms have attempted advertising-revenue expansion with mixed results. We tell clients in marketplace categories that retail-media expansion requires demand-side scale, adtech infrastructure, and advertiser-side education before the ROAS economics produce sustained advertising spend.

## Frequently asked questions

When did DoorDash launch its advertising platform?

DoorDash announced its self-serve advertising platform with broader merchant access in 2023, expanding an existing advertising business that had been operated through direct-sales relationships with major brands. The 2024 Symbiosys acquisition expanded the retail-media capabilities further with adtech infrastructure.

What are Sponsored Listings?

A pay-per-confirmed-order format where restaurants pay for prime placement in DoorDash app search results and category pages. Restaurants only pay when a customer completes an order through the ad. Average reported ROAS is approximately $6 per $1 spent over one month, with more than 45% of ad-generated orders coming from new customers.

What is Symbiosys?

An adtech firm DoorDash acquired in 2024 specialising in retail-media programmatic and performance-marketing technology. The acquisition expanded DoorDash's retail-media capabilities beyond in-app placements to broader programmatic advertising across DoorDash and partner properties.

How does DoorDash advertising compare to Amazon Advertising?

Amazon Advertising is much larger in absolute scale (Amazon ad revenue exceeds $40 billion annually); DoorDash is much smaller. DoorDash specializes in food-and-CPG advertiser relationships at higher engagement per impression than broader-category retail media. The two platforms are not directly competitive in most categories but compete for some shared CPG advertiser budgets.

What types of advertisers use DoorDash?

Restaurants (using Sponsored Listings for menu-item promotion), CPG brands (food manufacturers, beverage companies, household-goods producers selling through DashMart and grocery integration), and major consumer brands (using homepage banners, Offers Hub promotions, and broader brand campaigns). The self-serve platform launched in 2023 expanded access to small-and-mid-merchants beyond the direct-sales-supported major brand advertisers.

Is DoorDash advertising profitable?

DoorDash does not break out advertising revenue specifically in its financial reporting. Retail-media businesses generally produce high gross margins (the marginal cost of an ad impression is essentially zero) and contribute meaningfully to platform-economics improvement. DoorDash's advertising business is widely viewed as a positive contributor to broader DoorDash profitability and is one of the components of DoorDash's overall Contribution Profit growth through 2023-2024.
