# Magic Spoon: dtc subscription reinvented breakfast cereal

Magic Spoon built a $100M+ revenue brand reinventing breakfast cereal as a high-protein, low-sugar adult product — sold primarily via DTC subscription before expanding to retail.

**Founded:** 2019

**Vertical:** CPG / Cereal / DTC Subscription

**Primary channels:** Paid Social DR + DTC Subscription + Retail Expansion

## The founding and history

Magic Spoon was founded in 2019 by Greg Sewitz and Gabi Lewis. The founding insight: traditional breakfast cereal was a declining category (sugary, carb-heavy, marketed primarily to children), but adults nostalgic for the cereal experience wanted a healthier formulation that fit modern macros (high protein, low sugar, keto-compatible).[[1]](#cite-1)

The product positioning: '12-14g of protein, 4-5g of net carbs, 0g of sugar' — explicit macros stated on the packaging. Flavors deliberately referenced childhood cereal nostalgia (Fruity, Cocoa, Frosted, Peanut Butter, Cinnamon) rather than health-focused naming.

## The playbook executed

Magic Spoon launched DTC-only via magicspoon.com with a subscription-default checkout ($39 for 4 boxes monthly). The paid social DR engine (Facebook and Instagram primarily) targeted lookalike audiences of nostalgia-cereal buyers, keto dieters, and high-protein-diet adherents.[[2]](#cite-2)

The brand visual identity leaned into 1990s cereal nostalgia — bright colors, fun typography, character mascots. The packaging design was both functional and meme-friendly; the brand frequently appeared in keto-and-health-content TikTok and Instagram organically.

## The results

By 2022 Magic Spoon had reached an estimated $40M+ in DTC revenue. The company then expanded into retail — first at Whole Foods, then at Walmart, Target, Kroger, and other mass retailers.[[3]](#cite-3) The retail expansion added a treats line (cereal bars), expanding category beyond original cereal SKUs. Estimated total revenue exceeded $100M by 2023-2024.

## What this case study teaches

- **Adult-positioned versions of childhood categories can disrupt declining segments** — Magic Spoon revitalized cereal by repositioning for adults.
- **Explicit macros communicate positioning concretely** — 12g protein and 0g sugar are testable, not subjective.
- **Subscription-default DTC scales LTV** — the monthly 4-pack subscription model captured repeat-purchase economics.
- **Retail expansion compounds DTC awareness** — Magic Spoon at Walmart leveraged DTC brand recognition.
- **Nostalgia + modern formulation is a powerful CPG positioning combination** — multiple brands (Olipop with soda, Magic Spoon with cereal, Surely with non-alcoholic wine) have applied this pattern.
