# OLIPOP: redefining soda for the gut-health era

OLIPOP built a functional-beverage category from scratch via creator marketing, retail partnerships, and a Subscribe & Save backbone on Amazon.

**Founded:** 2018

**Vertical:** CPG / Functional Beverages

**Primary channels:** Creator + Retail + Amazon + DTC

## The founding and category creation

OLIPOP was founded in 2018 by Ben Goodwin and David Lester in Berkeley, California. Goodwin had previously co-founded Obi Probiotic Soda; OLIPOP was a second-act product designed from the start to be a soda alternative containing functional ingredients (prebiotics, plant fiber, botanicals) that addressed gut-health concerns.[[1]](#cite-1)

The product positioning was deliberate: OLIPOP would taste like soda (it does — flavors include Vintage Cola, Strawberry Vanilla, Cherry Vanilla, Orange Squeeze, Classic Root Beer) but contain 2-5g of sugar (vs. 39g in Coca-Cola) and 9g of plant fiber. The functional positioning targeted consumers who had moved away from traditional soda but missed the experience — and consumers actively seeking gut-health-supportive products.

## The early DTC and creator playbook

OLIPOP launched DTC via olipop.com and Amazon and invested aggressively in creator partnerships from launch. The brand seeded product to nutritionists, gut-health-focused creators on Instagram and TikTok, and health-and-wellness podcast hosts.[[2]](#cite-2) The creator content positioned OLIPOP as the soda-substitute that fit a wellness lifestyle — a positioning that legacy soda couldn't credibly claim and that newer functional-beverage brands like Health-Ade Kombucha or LaCroix didn't occupy directly.

Amazon became a major channel from the start. OLIPOP optimized for Amazon Sponsored Products, deployed Subscribe & Save offers aggressively (the gut-health repeat-purchase pattern made S&S unusually effective), and used Amazon Marketing Cloud to measure cross-channel halo effects.[[3]](#cite-3)

## The retail expansion

By 2020-2021, OLIPOP had expanded into national retail distribution — first through natural and specialty grocery (Whole Foods, Sprouts, regional natural grocers) and then into mass retail (Target, Kroger, Publix, Wegmans, Walmart). By 2024 the brand was distributed in 40,000+ US retail doors.[[4]](#cite-4)

The retail playbook leveraged the existing DTC and creator-led brand awareness — retail buyers saw OLIPOP performing strongly on Amazon and on social, which de-risked the buy-in decision. Once in stores, the brand's distinctive can design (12oz slim cans with retro-modern typography) helped on-shelf merchandising and recognition.

OLIPOP raised meaningfully — a $30M Series B in 2022, then a Series C reportedly valuing the company at $1.85B in February 2025. The valuation reflected the brand's successful category creation: OLIPOP and Poppi (the other major prebiotic soda brand, recently acquired by PepsiCo for $1.95B in March 2025) had together created the prebiotic soda category, which Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and other CPG majors now treat as a strategic category.[[5]](#cite-5)

#### RGM Experts Say

OLIPOP and Poppi together demonstrate how new CPG categories get created in 2026: not via legacy CPG R&D pipelines, but via founder-led DTC + creator brands that build awareness and demand before the majors notice. PepsiCo's $1.95B acquisition of Poppi in 2025 validates the category and the path. The lesson for emerging CPG: build DTC + creator + Amazon + selective retail in parallel for 18-36 months before the major distributors will take you seriously. Once they do, the upside is enormous.

## What the OLIPOP playbook teaches

OLIPOP demonstrates how new CPG categories get created today: founder-led, DTC-and-creator-first, retail expansion later, exit at category-creation scale. The brand executed this pattern with discipline — the operational rigor on Amazon (Subscribe & Save penetration, AMC measurement), retail (national distribution within 4-5 years of founding), and creator partnerships (broad seeding rather than concentrated celebrity bets) all contributed.

- **Founder-led + DTC + creator builds new categories** — major CPG R&D pipelines can't move this fast.
- **Amazon Subscribe & Save is the modern CPG repeat-purchase engine** — OLIPOP's S&S penetration was a major contributor to economics.
- **Retail expansion compounds existing brand awareness** — DTC + Amazon + creator builds the brand recognition that lets retail buyers take the meeting.
- **Distinctive packaging matters for on-shelf merchandising** — OLIPOP's design language was a major in-store asset.
- **Functional positioning beats taste positioning in 2026 CPG** — the consumer wants taste AND function, not one or the other.
