# Quip: dtc subscription reimagined oral care

Quip combined a minimalist electric toothbrush design with replenishment-subscription brush heads and toothpaste — building a DTC oral-care brand around recurring revenue.

**Founded:** 2014

**Vertical:** Personal Care / DTC Subscription / Oral Care

**Primary channels:** DTC Subscription + Retail + Brand Design

## The founding and history

Quip was founded in 2014 by Simon Enever and Bill May in Brooklyn. The founding insight: electric toothbrushes were either expensive (Oral-B and Sonicare at $100-$300) or cheap-and-disposable (mass retail at $5-$15); the middle was unaddressed. A premium-feeling but moderately-priced electric toothbrush sold via DTC subscription could capture customers from both ends and earn recurring revenue from replacement brush heads.[[1]](#cite-1)

The product design language was deliberately Apple-influenced: minimalist aluminum body, simple buttons, premium feel. The packaging emphasized aesthetic over feature lists. The brand positioning placed Quip in the design-led consumer-electronics space rather than the medical-device-feeling premium dental space.

## The playbook executed

The subscription model: customer pays $25 for the brush, then $5 every 3 months for a replacement brush head, battery, and toothpaste (originally — toothpaste was added later, then dropped, then re-added). The subscription default automated the replacement-purchase decision that most consumers neglected to make actively.[[2]](#cite-2)

Marketing leaned heavily on design and lifestyle content. Quip's Instagram and Facebook ads emphasized the aesthetic of the product rather than dental-health claims. The brand earned editorial press coverage from design and lifestyle publications (Wired, Fast Company, Wallpaper, GQ) that prestige dental brands couldn't easily attract.

## The results

By 2019-2020, Quip had reached an estimated $100M+ in annual revenue and expanded into retail (Target, Walmart) alongside continuing DTC subscription. The company added dental-services products (oral care subscriptions sold through dentists), expanded internationally, and continued growing through 2024-2025.[[3]](#cite-3)

## What this case study teaches

- **Design-led brand positioning can break entrenched categories** — Quip's aesthetic positioning displaced functional-feature dental brands.
- **Subscription replenishment for consumables creates LTV moat** — replacement brush heads compound revenue per acquired customer.
- **Bracket pricing addresses unmet middle segments** — Quip occupied the $25-$50 space between cheap-disposable and premium-medical.
- **Editorial press is amplified by design-led products** — Wired and Fast Company covered Quip in ways they don't cover commodity dental brands.
- **Retail expansion follows DTC brand-build** — Quip's DTC awareness made Target distribution credible.
