# The Farmer's Dog: fresh pet food subscription reinvented pet nutrition

The Farmer's Dog scaled to $300M+ revenue with a fresh, human-grade pet food subscription delivered to homes — disrupting the kibble-dominated pet food category.

**Founded:** 2014

**Vertical:** Pet / DTC Subscription / Fresh Food

**Primary channels:** Paid Social DR + Quiz + Subscription

## The founding and history

The Farmer's Dog was founded in 2014 by Jonathan Regev and Brett Podolsky in NYC. The founding insight: most dog food was either ultra-processed kibble (questionable nutritional value) or home-cooked (operationally hard for owners). A subscription service delivering pre-portioned fresh, human-grade dog food could occupy the middle.[[1]](#cite-1)

The product positioning was concrete: 'human-grade' (the meat and produce meet the same regulatory standards as food for human consumption), recipe variants tailored to each dog's profile (size, age, activity level, allergies), and freshly cooked rather than ultra-processed. Pricing reflected the premium positioning — typical monthly subscriptions ran $50-$150+ depending on dog size, considerably above kibble pricing.

## The playbook executed

Marketing followed the canonical DTC subscription playbook: paid social DR (Facebook and Instagram) drove traffic to a quiz-based customization flow ('Tell us about your dog'), the quiz produced a personalized recipe and pricing recommendation, subscription default converted quiz-takers to monthly subscribers. The unit economics worked because the subscription captured ongoing revenue from high-LTV pet-owner customers.[[2]](#cite-2)

The brand voice emphasized pet-owner emotion — videos of dogs eating fresh food, testimonials about pet-health improvements, social content centered on dog culture. The marketing felt like content from a pet-owner-community rather than from a commercial brand.

## The results

By 2023-2024 The Farmer's Dog had grown to an estimated $300M+ in annual revenue with continued growth into 2025. The company raised a Series E round at unicorn valuation in 2022; the fresh pet food category overall grew rapidly with competitors (Ollie, Nom Nom, Just Food For Dogs) expanding alongside.[[3]](#cite-3)

## What this case study teaches

- **Human-grade positioning differentiates from commodity pet food** — testable claim that competitors couldn't easily replicate.
- **Quiz-as-marketing serves multiple purposes** — customization, conversion, data collection.
- **Subscription LTV justifies premium hardware investment** — fresh-cooked-and-shipped operations costs are offset by retention economics.
- **Pet-emotional brand voice converts pet owners** — focusing on the dog rather than the product.
- **Category-creating brands face follow-on competition** — Ollie, Nom Nom and others entered after The Farmer's Dog proved the model.
