# The Hustle: newsletter to $27m hubspot acquisition

Sam Parr's The Hustle built a 1.5M-subscriber daily business newsletter and was acquired by HubSpot in 2021 for $27M — validating the newsletter business model alongside Morning Brew.

**Founded:** 2016

**Vertical:** Media / Newsletter / Content

**Primary channels:** Email + Content + Premium Subscription + Events

## The founding and history

The Hustle was founded in 2016 by Sam Parr in San Francisco. Parr was a serial entrepreneur (Hustle Con event series, prior failed startups) who recognized the opportunity in business-content newsletters at the same time as Morning Brew's emergence. The Hustle's positioning emphasized business and tech news for entrepreneurs and ambitious professionals — somewhat more story-driven and quirky than Morning Brew's conversational corporate-news voice.[[1]](#cite-1)

The newsletter grew through 2016-2020 via referral mechanics (similar to Morning Brew's playbook), aggressive content writing, and Sam Parr's personal brand presence. Parr was unusually transparent about The Hustle's business — sharing revenue numbers, subscriber growth, and strategic decisions on Twitter and in podcast appearances.

## The playbook executed

In 2018-2019, The Hustle launched Trends — a premium subscription product ($299/year) covering specific business and investing trends with proprietary research. Trends became a meaningful revenue contributor alongside the free-newsletter sponsorship model.[[2]](#cite-2)

HubSpot acquired The Hustle in January 2021 for $27M cash. The acquisition combined The Hustle's audience with HubSpot's existing content marketing investments. Parr left HubSpot in 2022 and launched the My First Million podcast (now one of the largest business podcasts), continuing his personal-brand presence post-exit.

## The results

The Hustle's trajectory mirrored Morning Brew's in many ways — newsletter business model validated, acquisition exit, founder-led brand extension. Together the two acquisitions (Morning Brew at $75M, The Hustle at $27M) defined the newsletter-as-acquisition-target pattern that subsequently triggered the broader newsletter ecosystem (Substack growth, Industry Dive expansion, Workweek launch, etc.).[[3]](#cite-3)

## What this case study teaches

- **Founder transparency builds audience and credibility** — Parr's public sharing built audience that ROI'd into newsletter subscribers.
- **Premium subscription products diversify newsletter revenue** — Trends added high-margin revenue on top of sponsorship.
- **Newsletter acquisitions validate the model** — HubSpot's purchase confirmed newsletter audiences are strategic assets.
- **Post-acquisition founder departure is common** — Parr (and many similar founders) exit acquirers to start new ventures.
- **Founder-personal-brand extension continues post-acquisition** — Parr's podcast extended his personal brand beyond The Hustle.
