# SiteGround

SiteGround is the mid-tier managed WordPress host — meaningful step up from budget shared hosting at a reasonable price.

## What SiteGround actually is

SiteGround was founded in 2004 in Sofia, Bulgaria by Tenko Nikolov and a small team. The company grew to host 2.8M+ domains globally and is considered one of the better mid-tier WordPress hosts. SiteGround remains private and bootstrapped.

SiteGround sits in the mid-tier of WordPress hosting — meaningfully better than budget shared hosting (GoDaddy, Bluehost, HostGator) but priced below premium managed WordPress (Kinsta, WP Engine). The platform's value proposition: managed WordPress experience at $15-$45/month rather than $30-$300+/month.

## How it fits in the broader stack

The competitive position: SiteGround competes with Cloudways, A2 Hosting, and DreamHost at the mid-tier. Above SiteGround: WP Engine, Kinsta. Below SiteGround: the budget shared hosts. For brands at the $0-$5M ARR range, SiteGround is often a good default; above that, the upgrade to Kinsta or WP Engine usually pays back.

SiteGround historically used a customized cPanel; in 2020 they migrated to their own Site Tools control panel. The migration was controversial at the time but the current Site Tools experience is generally considered superior to legacy cPanel.

## Key features and capabilities

Core features: managed WordPress hosting with daily backups, free SSL, free CDN (SiteGround CDN), free email accounts, staging environments (on higher plans), WordPress auto-updates, server-level caching (SuperCacher), 24/7 support, free migration plugin, Git integration on higher plans, free Cloudflare integration, server-level firewall and security.

Recent additions: Ultrafast PHP (custom PHP optimizations for higher performance), AI-powered site builder (WordPress Starter), expanded geographic presence (data centers in more regions), improved staging environment workflow.

## Pricing and tier comparison

Pricing: StartUp at $14.99/month renewal ($3.99 intro for first term), GrowBig at $24.99/month renewal ($6.69 intro), GoGeek at $39.99/month renewal ($10.69 intro). The renewal pricing is significantly higher than the intro pricing — pay attention to multi-year contracts. Cloud plans run $80-$240/month for higher resource needs.

Trade-offs vs Kinsta/WP Engine: lower price but lower performance ceiling and less hand-holding on technical issues. Trade-offs vs budget hosts: higher price but materially better performance and support. SiteGround occupies a defensible middle position.

#### RGM Experts Say

RGM Experts Say: SiteGround is the right answer for clients at $500K-$5M ARR who can't justify Kinsta's pricing. Above that revenue tier, the math on premium managed WordPress almost always works out. The performance gap between SiteGround and Kinsta is real and shows up in Core Web Vitals scores, but at smaller scale the absolute impact is smaller and the cost differential is harder to justify.

## When we recommend it (and when we don't)

We recommend SiteGround for: SMB and growth-stage brands where Kinsta's pricing is prohibitive, agencies serving cost-sensitive clients who still want managed WordPress experience, brands needing a hosting upgrade from Bluehost/GoDaddy without the jump to enterprise pricing. We recommend upgrading to Kinsta or WP Engine when traffic exceeds ~100K monthly visits or when site performance matters for SEO/conversion.
