# Squarespace

Squarespace is the all-in-one website builder for small businesses and design-conscious users. Hosted, opinionated, easy to use.

## What Squarespace actually is

Squarespace was founded in 2003 by Anthony Casalena while he was a student at the University of Maryland. The company went public on NYSE in 2021 via direct listing (ticker SQSP) and serves approximately 4M+ paying subscribers globally. Squarespace acquired Tock (restaurant reservations) and Bio Sites (link-in-bio tool) to expand its product offering.

Squarespace sits in the all-in-one website builder category alongside Wix. Both target small businesses and design-conscious users who want a polished site without WordPress's operational overhead. The platforms compete on design quality, ease of use, and value-for-money at the SMB tier.

## How it fits in the broader stack

Squarespace's competitive position: design-led brand recognition (the company has invested heavily in advertising — Squarespace Super Bowl ads, sponsorships), high-quality templates, integrated ecommerce, integrated email marketing, integrated scheduling (via Acuity acquisition). The trade-offs: less customizable than WordPress, less feature-deep than Wix in some categories, fewer third-party integrations.

For most SMB use cases, Squarespace works well. For brands that want maximum design polish at the SMB tier, Squarespace is often the answer. For brands graduating beyond SMB scale, the upgrade path is typically Webflow (for design-led brands) or WordPress (for content-heavy brands).

## Key features and capabilities

Core features: visual website builder with 100+ template options, integrated CMS for blog/portfolio/products, ecommerce (Commerce Basic at $36/month or Commerce Advanced at $65/month), email marketing (Squarespace Email Campaigns), scheduling (via Acuity), basic analytics, member areas (gated content), basic SEO tools, mobile-optimized templates, free SSL, hosting included.

Recent additions: Fluid Engine (visual editor replacing the legacy Index Pages system), AI features for content and design, expanded ecommerce features (subscriptions, abandoned cart recovery, gift cards), improved member areas, deeper integration with the acquired Acuity scheduling and Bio Sites products.

## Pricing and tier comparison

Pricing: Personal at $16/month (annual), Business at $23/month, Commerce Basic at $36/month, Commerce Advanced at $65/month. Monthly billing available at higher rates. Yearly prepay is the standard.

Trade-offs vs Wix: Squarespace has stronger brand recognition and design polish, Wix has slightly more features and more aggressive growth. Trade-offs vs WordPress: Squarespace is dramatically simpler operationally but less customizable. Trade-offs vs Webflow: Squarespace is more locked-in but easier for non-design users.

#### RGM Experts Say

RGM Experts Say: Squarespace is the right answer for many SMB use cases. The mistake is staying on Squarespace too long as the business grows — by the time you're at $5M+ ARR with serious content and marketing operations, Squarespace becomes a constraint. The migration path is straightforward (Squarespace's export tools work well enough) but takes 4-12 weeks of effort. Plan the migration before it's urgent.

## When we recommend it (and when we don't)

We recommend Squarespace for: SMB brand sites, design-conscious solo operators and small businesses, brands that value all-in-one (site + email + scheduling + commerce in one platform), brands that don't need extensive customization. We recommend upgrading to Webflow or Framer when design ceiling becomes constraining, or to WordPress when content/feature depth requires it.
