# Target CPA Bidding

Target CPA bids dynamically to keep your average cost-per-acquisition at the level you declared. How the algorithm learns, when it works, and the failure modes that obscure bad data.

## What Target CPA does

Target CPA (tCPA) is an automated bidding strategy where you declare the cost-per-acquisition you want to hit. Google's algorithm bids dynamically — sometimes high, sometimes low — to keep your average CPA at that target across the campaign. Individual auction prices vary; the average converges.

Google needs roughly 30 conversions in the trailing 30 days to train tCPA effectively. Below that, the algorithm lacks signal and performance is unstable.

## When tCPA fits

- Mature campaigns with stable, well-defined conversion events.
- Lead-gen, app installs, or fixed-AOV ecommerce.
- Accounts with 30+ conversions per month per campaign or ad group.
- Brands with clear unit economics that define a payback CPA.

## When tCPA misses

- Accounts where conversion value varies materially per customer. Use tROAS instead.
- Accounts with delayed conversion events ([B2B SaaS](/learn/strategy/b2b-saas-playbook/) where contract value comes 30+ days later). Use offline conversion uploads with adjusted values.
- Accounts with broken conversion tracking. TCPA will optimize toward whatever fires, including bot conversions and accidental events.

## Setting the target

The target should match the CPA your [unit economics](/learn/concepts/cac-payback-and-ltv/) support. Common patterns: target CPA equal to 50 percent of LTV for healthy DTC. Target CPA equal to 30 percent of first-year revenue for B2B SaaS. Target CPA equal to first-order [contribution margin](/learn/concepts/contribution-margin/) for repeat-purchase categories.

## Failure modes that hide bad data

Conversion event fires too easily

The most common cause of tCPA underperformance. The conversion fires on "form submitted" but only 30 percent of those submissions are real qualified leads. The algorithm hits your CPA target on the unfiltered conversion but the actual qualified-lead CPA is 3x higher. Tighten the conversion definition or pass downstream qualification as the conversion event.

Target set too low

If you set tCPA at $20 in an auction where conversions cost $40, the algorithm cannot find enough qualifying impressions. Volume collapses. Raise the target progressively (10 percent steps) and watch volume return.

Target set too high

Algorithm finds it easy to hit. You spend at the target but a lower target would have produced the same volume at lower CPA. Start with a target slightly below your existing CPA and let the algorithm prove it can hit it.

Conversion volume drops below 30/month

tCPA degrades. Combine campaigns or ad groups until volume crosses the threshold, or switch to Maximize Conversions until volume builds.

## Operating checklist

1. Read the page above and identify the one or two patterns most relevant to your account.
2. Define a measurable test (budget, audience, conversion window) before changing anything live.
3. Apply the change in a controlled scope. Document the hypothesis.
4. Measure against the baseline. Watch the trailing 7, 14, and 30 days separately.
5. Decide to scale, hold, or roll back based on the data.
6. Capture the learning in your team's playbook so it survives the next change of operators.
