Podcast Advertising

## The last trusted ad on the *internet.*

A host their audience believes, reading your pitch in their own voice, into ears that chose to be there. We run podcasts as performance media — host-read trust plus dynamic-insertion scale — and prove it with pixels and holdouts, not download counts.

## Downloads aren’t *listens.*

Flip the metric. A download is a file request of sixty seconds of audio — not a human, not a completion, not a sale. Switch to what a pixel and a holdout actually prove and the vanity number gives way to revenue.

“Downloads” — a 60-second file request, deduped. Big on a slide. Proves nothing.

The IAB defines a valid download as 60+ seconds of audio transferred, deduped per listener — not a verified human listen (IAB Podcast Measurement v2.2, 2024). Measure completed listens, pixel conversions, and lift. Figures illustrative.[1](#src)

## Trust you can’t *fake.*

Listeners build a real relationship with a host they choose week after week — and they extend that trust to what the host endorses. No social feed comes close.

62% of podcast fans trust ads read by their favorite host versus 15% for social-media influencers (SuperListeners / Sounds Profitable, 2025); host-read recall runs 71% vs 62% announcer-read (Nielsen, 2020).[2](#src)

## Where the ad *lands.*

Pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll — the slot changes the price, the attention, and the job. Tap one for the numbers and where it wins.

Mid-roll commands the highest CPM and recall because the listener is already engaged; pre-roll is cheaper and immediate; post-roll is lowest (Ad Results Media, Acast, 2025). CPMs are agency estimates.[3](#src)

## Read it, or *insert it.*

Host-read, dynamically inserted, or fully programmatic — each balances trust, scale, and cost differently. Pick one to see what you gain and give up. The best programs use all three.

scale

Host-read carries the highest trust and recall; dynamic ad insertion is now over 90% of US podcast ad revenue, and programmatic is ~11% and growing fast (IAB, 2023). Most host-reads are themselves DAI-served.[4](#src)

## Video didn’t kill the *podcast ad.*

YouTube is now the most popular place to watch podcasts — but watching isn’t buying. Flip the lens: the video impression looks bigger, yet it converts worse, and most people still say they listen.

Judge by reach

Judge by conversions

#1 platform

YouTube leads podcast reach — the biggest audience, the most impressions. Looks like the obvious buy.

YouTube is the #1 podcast platform (Cumulus/Signal Hill, 2025), but YouTube podcast impressions convert up to ~25% worse than audio downloads at driving purchases (Oxford Road × Podscribe, 2025); 92% of consumers still say they listen.[5](#src)

## Run it like a *program.*

Podcast advertising isn’t one host-read and a promo code — it’s a sourcing, briefing, buying, and measurement loop. Each step has its own job. Tap through it.

## Price the *buy.*

Set a budget and a format, then watch the math: a spot costs the CPM times downloads over a thousand. The number that matters isn’t the CPM — it’s the cost of a completed, attributable listen.

Cost = CPM × downloads ÷ 1,000; the blended 60-second podcast CPM is ~$21 (Libsyn AdvertiseCast, 2024). Host-read ~$25–40, DAI ~$15–30, programmatic ~$5–15 (estimates). Illustrative — RGM analysis.[7](#src)

## Stack the *evidence.*

Promo codes undercount and downloads can’t prove cause. Click each way you tie a listen to a result — the more causal the method, the more you can trust the call to scale.

## Five ways brands waste *podcast budget.*

Most wasted podcast spend fails the same handful of ways. Open each one.

1 · Reporting downloads instead of listens

+

A download is a 60-second file request, not a human or a sale. Optimize to completed listens, pixel conversions, and incremental lift — numbers a CFO will accept.

2 · Over-scripting the host

+

The trust you’re paying for lives in the host’s own voice. Hand over the product and the talking points, not a word-for-word script — the organic read is the whole reason host-read outperforms.

3 · Chasing video reach over conversions

+

YouTube has the biggest podcast audience, but its impressions can convert up to a quarter less than audio downloads. Use video for discovery; measure the audio that drives action.

4 · Host-read or programmatic — never both

+

Host-read carries trust; dynamic insertion and programmatic carry scale and targeting. Treating them as rivals leaves either credibility or reach on the table.

5 · One promo code as the whole measurement plan

+

Codes only capture discount-motivated listeners with good memories — they undercount badly. Lead with pixel attribution and a holdout, and use codes as a backstop, not the system.

## Trusted voices, *measured.*

No download vanity, no recycled scripts, no promo-code guesswork. A senior team sources and vets the shows, briefs the host for an authentic read, blends host-read with dynamic insertion, and proves it with pixels and holdouts. Pricing is custom: flat, project, or performance, by fit.

## Questions buyers *ask.*

**How much does podcast advertising cost?**

It is priced on a CPM, so cost equals the CPM times downloads divided by 1,000. As planning estimates, host-read sponsorships run about $25 to $40, dynamically inserted announcer reads about $15 to $30, and programmatic run-of-network about $5 to $15. The blended 60-second market average is roughly $21. Self-serve entry can start a few hundred dollars; a real test usually starts around $5,000 to $10,000.

**Are host-read podcast ads better than inserted ads?**

Host-read ads carry the most trust and recall because the host endorses the product in their own voice, and listeners trust them far more than social influencers. Dynamically inserted and programmatic ads carry scale, targeting, and frequency control. Most strong programs use host-read for the shows that matter and dynamic insertion for reach.

**How is podcast advertising measured?**

With pixel-based attribution such as Spotify Ad Analytics, promo codes and vanity URLs, brand-lift studies, and holdout or incrementality tests. A download only counts a file request of at least 60 seconds, not a verified human listen, so we optimize to completed, attributable listens and incremental lift.

**Do video podcasts work better for ads?**

Not necessarily for response. YouTube is now the most popular podcast platform, but independent analysis found YouTube podcast impressions can convert up to about 25 percent worse than audio downloads at driving purchases, even as most consumers still say they listen rather than watch. Use video for reach and discovery, but measure the audio that actually drives action.

**What is dynamic ad insertion?**

Dynamic ad insertion stitches ads into episodes at download time rather than baking them in permanently, so ads can be targeted by geography and audience, frequency-capped, and refreshed. It is now more than 90 percent of US podcast ad revenue.

**Should we make our own branded podcast?**

A branded or original podcast is owned media, a durable content asset rather than a rented ad slot. It works when you have a genuine story and commit to consistency; we help decide whether sponsoring existing shows, running host-read campaigns, or building an owned show best fits the goal.
