# Composable CDP vs Packaged CDP

Composable CDP (warehouse + reverse ETL) competes with packaged CDP on cost and flexibility. This module covers the comparison and the decision framework that picks the right approach for your context.

### What you will learn

1. Why composable CDPs emerged
2. The architecture: warehouse + reverse ETL + activation
3. The packaged CDP architecture
4. Comparing on cost
5. Comparing on time-to-value
6. Comparing on marketing self-service
7. Comparing on data freshness
8. Comparing on governance and compliance
9. Hybrid architectures
10. When packaged wins; when composable wins
11. Decision framework

## 1. Why composable emerged

Modern data teams centralize data in the warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks). The packaged CDP duplicates that data into another system. Composable CDP: keep data in the warehouse, layer marketing-activation tooling on top.

## 2. Composable architecture

- Warehouse as source of truth.
- Customer-360 model built with dbt / similar.
- Reverse ETL (Hightouch, Census) syncs audiences to destinations.
- Marketing tools (email, ads, personalization) receive synchronized audiences.

## 3. Packaged CDP architecture

- CDP ingests data from sources.
- CDP builds profiles and identity graph.
- CDP exposes audiences via UI and APIs.
- CDP activates to destinations natively.

## 4. Cost comparison

| | Packaged CDP | Composable |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Annual cost | $100k - $2M+ depending on tier and scale | $30k - $500k (warehouse + reverse ETL + tooling) |
| Implementation | 3 - 9 months | 2 - 12 months (depends on warehouse maturity) |
| Ongoing engineering | Low | Higher |

## 5. Time-to-value

Packaged: faster if data team is bandwidth-constrained but slower if data is messy. Composable: faster if warehouse and customer-360 model already exist; slower if starting from scratch.

## 6. Marketing self-service

Packaged: better marketer UX out of the box. Composable: depends on the reverse-ETL tool's UI; modern tools (Hightouch, Census) have improved significantly.

## 7. Data freshness

Packaged: typically real-time or near-real-time. Composable: depends on warehouse refresh and reverse-ETL sync frequency (often hourly to near-real-time).

## 8. Governance and compliance

Composable wins on governance: all customer data lives in one governed system (the warehouse), with data team oversight. Packaged: data duplicated, governance lives in CDP separately.

## 9. Hybrid

Many enterprises run hybrid: packaged CDP for real-time activation use cases, composable for warehouse-centric batch audiences. Adobe RT-CDP and Salesforce Data Cloud both natively support hybrid patterns.

## 10. When each wins

- **Packaged wins** when: data is scattered and not in warehouse; marketing is bandwidth-constrained on engineering; real-time activation is critical; vendor partnerships matter.
- **Composable wins** when: warehouse exists and data team is mature; engineering capacity is available; long-term flexibility and cost matter; vendor lock-in concerns are real.

## 11. Decision framework

1. Where does your customer data live today?
2. What is your engineering capacity?
3. What is your real-time requirement?
4. What is your activation surface?
5. What is your budget over 3 years?
6. Who owns the customer data function?

**How to use this module:** The architecture comparison (Section 4), the wins-when lists (Section 10), and the decision framework (Section 11) are the planning artifacts.
