## Why mobile app growth is distinct

Mobile app growth combines App Store mechanics, paid UA in walled gardens, in-app monetization, and lifecycle. iOS ATT in 2021 changed measurement fundamentally. The discipline differs from web growth in nearly every dimension.

## App lifecycle

- Awareness (impressions, brand exposure).
- Acquisition (install).
- Activation (first session value).
- Retention (day 1, 7, 30 returns).
- Monetization (subscription, IAP, ads).
- Referral (organic invitations).

## Mobile app metrics

- Installs (paid + organic).
- D1, D7, D30, D90 retention.
- ARPU, ARPPU.
- LTV (predictive).
- CAC by source.
- ROAS by source.
- Stickiness (DAU/MAU).
- Session frequency and length.

## iOS ATT

- iOS 14.5 ATT prompt requires user permission for IDFA.
- Opt-in rate 20–30% typical.
- SKAdNetwork (SKAN) replaces user-level attribution for opted-out.
- SKAN 4.0+ added more granular conversion windows.
- Probabilistic attribution illegal under ATT.
- iOS measurement degraded; Android less affected.

## App stores

- App Store (Apple) and Google Play dominate.
- Discovery: search, browse, featured, recommendations.
- ~65% of installs from store search.
- ASO is foundational acquisition channel.
- Editorial featuring drives spikes.

## Paid UA

- Apple Search Ads (ASA).
- Google UAC / App campaigns.
- Meta App Install ads.
- TikTok App Install ads.
- Snap, Pinterest, Reddit secondary.
- UA networks (Unity, ironSource).
- DSPs and exchanges.

## Retention

- Most apps lose 70%+ users by D7.
- D30 retention 5–15% typical.
- Top apps achieve 30%+ D30.
- Retention drives LTV; LTV drives acquisition feasibility.
- Engagement loops critical.

## Advanced playbook

- MMP (Mobile Measurement Partner) properly configured.
- SKAN setup and CV (conversion value) mapping.
- ASO + paid coordinated.
- Cohort LTV by source.
- Activation milestone defined.
- Lifecycle automation (push, email, in-app).
- Annual app store editorial outreach.
- A/B testing on store and in-app.
- Subscription vs IAP economics.
- Cross-platform considerations (iOS vs Android).

## Common mistakes

- Web growth tactics applied to mobile.
- ASO neglected; paid only.
- SKAN not configured.
- MMP not set up.
- Activation milestone missing.
- Retention treated as separate.
- iOS vs Android strategies identical.
- Cohort LTV by source not tracked.
- Lifecycle automation absent.
- Subscription model without optimization.

## Operating checklist

- MMP configured (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch)
- SKAN setup with CV mapping
- ASO active
- Paid UA across major channels
- Activation milestone defined
- D1/D7/D30 retention tracked
- Cohort LTV by source
- Lifecycle automation (push + email + in-app)
- iOS vs Android tracked separately
- Annual app store outreach
