Walmart Marketplace listings: setup and optimization

Walmart Marketplace is the second-largest US marketplace after Amazon. The listing structure parallels Amazon's but with different specifications, different ranking signals, and different operational quirks. Brands selling on both Amazon and Walmart find Walmart's lower-competition environment rewarding once they invest in proper listing optimization.

Listing setup process

  1. Apply for Marketplace Seller. Apply at marketplace.walmart.com/seller. Approval typically 2-6 weeks; faster for established brands.
  2. Item Setup. Manual entry, single-item template, bulk template (XLSX), or API integration. Bulk templates are category-specific.
  3. Content review. Walmart reviews each listing; approval typically 24-72 hours for compliant listings.
  4. Inventory and pricing sync. Walmart Connect API for real-time sync; manual updates also possible.
  5. Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) enrollment if using Walmart's 3PL — similar role to Amazon FBA. Optional but improves Buy Box win rate.
  6. Walmart Connect advertising for Sponsored Search and beyond — see Walmart Connect.

Listing quality scoring

Walmart scores every listing on a 0-100 "content quality" scale. The score combines:

  • Required field completeness (title, description, images, primary attribute set).
  • Recommended field completeness (additional attributes specific to the category).
  • Image count and quality (multiple images, 1000px+ on longest side).
  • Description length and structure (300-2000 chars, paragraph breaks).
  • Rich content presence (Rich Media for eligible categories).

Listings below 75 quality score rank worse and convert worse. Listings at 90+ get preferred placement.

Title structure for Walmart

Walmart's title best practice is shorter and cleaner than Amazon's. Format: brand + product type + key feature + size/color/quantity. Under 75 characters is preferred (vs Amazon's 200).

Avoid: ALL CAPS, exclamation marks, promotional terms, redundant keywords. Walmart's title moderation is stricter than Amazon's.

Image specifications

Image typeRequirement
Primary image2000×2000 px optimal, white background, product fills 80-90% of frame
Secondary images1000×1000 px minimum, lifestyle and detail shots
Number of images4-7 typically; some categories allow more
Video30-60 second product video, MP4 format, available in select categories

The Buy Box

Like Amazon, Walmart awards the "Buy Box" (default purchase option) to one seller per listing when multiple sellers offer the same SKU. Buy Box criteria:

  • Competitive pricing (within Walmart's price-leadership thresholds).
  • Fast and reliable shipping (Walmart Fulfillment Services or Two-Day shipping enabled).
  • Strong seller performance (order defect rate, on-time shipping, customer service responsiveness).
  • In stock.

Walmart Pro Seller badge

A reputation-quality designation for top-performing sellers. Requirements: 95%+ on-time delivery, low cancellation rate, fast customer service response. Pro Seller listings get preferential ranking and a visible badge that lifts conversion.

Walmart Connect promotion

Once listings are live and optimized, the next layer is Walmart Connect advertising:

  • Sponsored Search — keyword-targeted ads on Walmart.com search results.
  • Sponsored Brands — banner placements at the top of search.
  • Sponsored Videos — auto-playing video on PDPs and category pages.
  • Display — behavioral targeting using Walmart purchase audiences.
  • Walmart DSP (powered by TTD) — off-Walmart programmatic with Walmart audience activation.

How long does Walmart Marketplace approval take?

2-6 weeks for new sellers. Faster for established brands with strong documentation; slower for restricted categories. Walmart is selective about sellers — be prepared to share business documentation.

Is Walmart easier than Amazon to win on?

Competition is lower for many categories — fewer sellers, less aggressive keyword bidding, lower content-arms-race intensity. The flip side: traffic is lower too. For brands with capacity, Walmart is often a top-3 marketplace investment after Amazon.

What's WFS?

Walmart Fulfillment Services — Walmart's 3PL, similar role to Amazon FBA. WFS-fulfilled listings get the "Two-Day shipping" badge, preferential ranking, and easier Buy Box win. The economics depend on category; check WFS fees against your current fulfillment costs.

What's the Walmart Pro Seller program?

A reputation tier for top-performing sellers. Requires 95%+ on-time delivery, low cancellation rate, fast customer service. Earns a visible badge and preferential ranking. Worth aggressively pursuing for any serious Walmart seller.

Can I use the same listings on Amazon and Walmart?

The content needs to be adapted — different title length conventions, different category taxonomies, different image specifications. Feed management platforms handle the transformation. Don't copy-paste Amazon titles into Walmart.

How do I rank higher on Walmart.com search?

High content quality score (90+), competitive pricing, fast shipping, Buy Box ownership, and Sponsored Search ads for keyword visibility. Sales velocity matters but less heavily than on Amazon.

Operating checklist

  1. Audit the current state of listings, store, and feed before changing anything.
  2. Standardize the source-of-truth catalog in one PIM, ERP, or master sheet.
  3. Build per-channel feed transforms; never edit channel data manually.
  4. Validate every required and recommended attribute per channel's spec.
  5. Monitor approval status and disapproval reasons daily for first 30 days.
  6. A/B test images, titles, and bullet points monthly on the top-volume listings.
  7. Document the listing system in a runbook the next operator can read.
