affinity audience · noun
An interest-based reach segment.
"We opened with an affinity audience of fitness enthusiasts, then retargeted the engaged."

Definition in plain terms

An affinity audience is a targeting segment built from people who show a consistent, long-term interest in a topic or lifestyle — 'fitness enthusiasts', 'foodies', 'avid travelers'. The label was popularized by Google Ads, and the idea is identity-based — who someone IS over time — rather than what they are shopping for right now. It is a broad, top-of-funnel tool for reaching the right kind of person at scale.

The mechanics

Platforms build affinity segments from accumulated behavioral signals — browsing, watching, and engagement patterns that suggest a durable interest. The contrast that matters is with IN-MARKET audiences, which capture active, near-term purchase intent (someone researching a specific product now). Affinity casts a wide net for awareness and consideration; in-market catches the smaller, hotter group near a decision. Custom and lookalike audiences sit alongside as ways to model interest from your own data.

When it matters

Affinity audiences earn their place at the top of the funnel — building awareness and filling the consideration set among people predisposed to the category, where precise purchase intent does not yet exist to target. They underperform when used as a bottom-funnel conversion tool, because broad interest is not the same as readiness to buy. The strong play is sequencing — use affinity for reach, then retarget the people who engage with intent-based messaging closer to the sale.

Worked example. A running-shoe brand launching a new model wants reach among the right people before anyone is searching for it. It targets an affinity audience of running and fitness enthusiasts with a brand-building video — broad, cheap, top-of-funnel. The campaign is judged on reach and engagement, not direct sales. Viewers who watch or click are pooled into a retargeting audience and served a product-and-offer message weeks later, when the affinity reach has done its job of building awareness and the warmer intent message converts the engaged.
Failure modes to watch. Using affinity audiences for bottom-funnel conversion (intent lives in in-market, not affinity); judging awareness reach on last-click sales; conflating affinity with in-market; and over-narrowing a tool whose value is broad, scaled reach.
