Who he is

Frederick Vallaeys was one of the first handful of AdWords evangelists at Google in the early 2000s, working on the product as it grew into the engine of the modern web economy. He later co-founded Optmyzr, a PPC management platform, where he is CEO, and wrote Digital Marketing in an AI World. He is one of the most-quoted practitioners on where paid search is heading as automation takes over more of the work.

What he is known for

His signature idea is automation layering: rather than letting Google’s automation run unchecked or trying to do everything by hand, you add your own layer — scripts, rules and tools — on top of the platform’s automation. Done well, it frees the human from repetitive tasks and moves them up to strategy, guardrails and judgment. It reframes the rise of machine learning in ads from a threat into a job description.

Why he matters for paid search

As Google removes manual levers and hands more decisions to machine learning — Smart Bidding, Performance Max — the skill that remains is knowing what to automate, what to control, and how to guide the algorithm with the right inputs. Vallaeys named that shift early and clearly. It is exactly the posture RGM takes toward PMax: enormous leverage, used deliberately.

In his own words

“It’s not a competition between man and machine, but a collaboration.”

— Frederick Vallaeys, Optmyzr

It is the cleanest statement of the modern paid-search mindset. Google’s automation is too powerful to ignore and too opaque to trust blindly. The winning operator neither fights it nor surrenders to it; they feed it good data, fence it with guardrails, and point it at the right goal.

Career & background

Vallaeys joined Google early in the life of AdWords as one of its first evangelists, spending roughly a decade helping advertisers and the industry understand the product. He left to co-found Optmyzr, building software that automates the repetitive parts of PPC management, and became a fixture on the conference and writing circuit — consistently arguing that automation should amplify the human strategist, not replace them.
