What it is, in plain terms

Google Ads is the auction platform monetizing Google's intent stream: advertisers bid on keywords to appear against searches, and on audiences across YouTube, display, Gmail, and shopping. Born as AdWords in October 2000 (renamed 2018), its quality-adjusted auction — where ad relevance discounts the price of attention — built the most profitable advertising machine in history.

How it actually works

Search remains the spine: the auction weighs bid × expected quality (CTR, relevance, landing experience), so relevance is a discount coupon. The modern platform is increasingly automated — Smart Bidding optimizes to target CPA/ROAS, and Performance Max bundles every surface into one goal-driven black box that performs well and explains little. The professional counterweights: search-term and placement reporting (audit where money lands), brand-traffic exclusions (PMax loves harvesting your own brand searches), value-based bidding fed by real margin data, and conversion measurement built to survive privacy limits (enhanced conversions, consent mode).

Where it fits

Google Ads is demand CAPTURE — the bottom of someone else's funnel. It converts existing intent superbly and creates almost none, which sets its strategic place: own your category's high-intent queries, defend the brand terms economically, and feed the machine honest value data — while the demand-CREATION budget (the 95% out-market) lives in reach channels. Its data exhaust is also strategy fuel: search terms are the market's diary.

Worked example. A B2B firm lets PMax run unattended and celebrates a 9x ROAS. The audit deflates it: 70% of conversions came from branded searches the sales team would have caught anyway. The rebuild: brand terms split into their own capped campaign, PMax fed offline-conversion values (closed-won revenue, not form fills), search terms mined monthly into new exact-match winners and negatives. Reported ROAS falls to 3.2x — and actual new-customer revenue per dollar doubles. The machine was fine; the measurement was flattering it.
Failure modes to watch. Letting PMax cannibalize brand search and claim the credit; optimizing to form fills when the business runs on qualified revenue; ignoring search-term reports (the budget leak AND the market research); and trusting platform-attributed ROAS as business truth.

Origin & history

Launched as Google AdWords in October 2000 with 350 advertisers and a self-serve, CPM model; the 2002 rebuild adopted (and improved) Overture's pay-per-click auction by making ad quality a pricing factor — the design that funded modern Google. Renamed Google Ads in July 2018 as the surfaces outgrew 'words.'

Etymology: source.
