Advanced Custom Fields was created by Elliot Condon in 2011 and acquired by WP Engine in May 2022. The plugin is the dominant WordPress custom-field solution, with 2M+ active installs and deep integration across the WordPress developer ecosystem. ACF is the way professional WordPress developers extend WordPress beyond its default post-and-page content model.

The plugin's value proposition: WordPress out of the box has minimal content modeling — Posts (with title, content, featured image, categories, tags) and Pages (similar).
