AMP for Email & BIMI · Modern Email Infrastructure

Two underused email standards that improve engagement and deliverability — AMP for Email (interactive in-inbox experiences) and BIMI (verified sender logos in the inbox). What they do, what they require, and whether the work is worth it.

Attribution. AMP for Email was developed by Google and launched in 2019, supported by Gmail and a few other email clients. BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is an open standard maintained by the AuthIndicators Working Group with major support from Google, Apple, Yahoo, and others. This article reviews both honestly.

AMP for Email · interactive in-inbox

AMP for Email lets you embed dynamic, interactive components directly inside an email — forms that submit without leaving the inbox, accordions that expand, real-time data that refreshes on open, polls and surveys with immediate response handling, and image carousels.

The user experience is genuinely better for certain use cases. RSVPing to an event without leaving Gmail. Browsing a product catalog inline. Completing a survey without a redirect.

Where AMP for Email works

Where AMP for Email doesn't

Client support is limited. Gmail supports it. Yahoo Mail supports it. Outlook largely does not. Apple Mail does not. For most consumer email lists, less than half the audience can experience AMP — meaning you have to author and maintain two versions (AMP and HTML fallback) for every interactive email.

The development overhead has limited adoption. As of 2026, AMP for Email is still a niche capability used by a small number of ESPs and brands. For most senders, the engineering cost outweighs the engagement lift.

BIMI · verified sender logos

BIMI lets verified senders display their brand logo next to the email in the recipient's inbox. The logo appears in the avatar area, replacing the default initial.

The reason this matters: brand recognition in the inbox is a real engagement signal. Emails with a recognizable logo see higher open rates (in published studies, lifts of 10–20% are typical, though results vary widely by sender, list, and category).

What BIMI requires

  1. DMARC at enforcement. Your domain must have a DMARC policy of p=quarantine or p=reject (not just p=none). This is the gating requirement.
  2. SVG Tiny PS logo. A square SVG version of your logo in the BIMI-specified format.
  3. VMC (Verified Mark Certificate). For Gmail and Apple Mail display, you need a paid certificate from an authorized provider verifying your trademark ownership. Annual cost roughly $1,200–$1,500 depending on provider.
  4. BIMI DNS record. A TXT record pointing to your logo file and certificate.
RGM operator perspective. BIMI is worth the work for established brands sending high-volume email where the brand is recognizable. The DMARC enforcement step is the bigger value — many senders don't have DMARC at p=reject because the migration work is real. BIMI gives you a forcing function to fix deliverability fundamentals you should have fixed anyway.

What to do

If you're an early-stage company or a small list: skip both for now. Focus on deliverability fundamentals (SPF, DKIM, DMARC at p=none initially), list hygiene, and engagement-based segmentation.

If you're an established brand with high-volume email: implement BIMI. The branding lift and deliverability discipline are worth it.

If you have specific high-value transactional use cases: consider AMP for Email for those specific use cases (event RSVPs, account management, survey collection).
