How to build a GTM setup.

Five steps. A clean GTM setup pays back for years. Here is the sequence from data layer to server-side.
  1. Plan the data layer. Design a consistent data layer schema first - it is the contract every tag reads from.
  2. Build tags and variables. Create tags and the variables that feed them, favoring built-in and data-layer variables.
  3. Configure triggers. Define exactly when each tag fires, and use blocking triggers to prevent double-counting.
  4. Add consent and governance. Wire Consent Mode v2, set permissions, and version every change.
  5. Go server-side. Move tags to a server-side container for durability, speed and first-party control.

What is the data layer?

The data layer is a structured object that holds the values tags need - page type, product, user state, events. A clean data layer is the single most important part of a reliable setup.

What are triggers in GTM?

Triggers define when a tag fires - a page view, click, form submit or custom event. Blocking triggers stop a tag from firing in certain conditions, preventing double-counting.

What is server-side GTM?

Server-side GTM runs a container on your own cloud server instead of the browser - faster pages, first-party control, and more resilience to ad blockers.

What is Consent Mode v2 in GTM?

Consent Mode v2 adjusts Google tag behavior based on consent and models conversions where consent is denied. It is required for advertisers targeting the EEA.
