Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant — preferred by many developers and writers for output quality, long-context reasoning, and Computer Use agentic capabilities.

What Claude actually is

Claude is Anthropic's flagship AI assistant. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei (former VP of Research at OpenAI), his sister Daniela Amodei (now President), and a group of co-founders who left OpenAI together. Anthropic's safety-research-first positioning shaped the company from inception — Constitutional AI, RLHF refinements, interpretability research, and the original "helpful, harmless, honest" framing distinguished the company in the AI labs landscape.

Anthropic raised approximately $7.3B from investors including Google ($2B+), Amazon ($4B+ committed), Salesforce Ventures, Spark Capital, and others. By 2026, Anthropic is valued at $40-$60B in private markets, generates $5-$10B in annual revenue (largely from API), and Claude is one of the three top-tier LLMs alongside ChatGPT and Gemini. The model family includes Claude Haiku (fast/cheap), Claude Sonnet (balanced), and Claude Opus (top-tier reasoning); each released in successive model generations (Claude 3, Claude 3.5, Claude 4, Claude 4.5, and continuing).

Claude's surface in 2026: the standalone Claude app (web at claude.ai, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows), Projects (persistent workspaces with context retention across conversations), Artifacts (renders code, documents, diagrams as live artifacts alongside chat), Computer Use (agentic computer control released October 2024 — Claude can take screenshots, click, type, navigate), the API (developer access at api.anthropic.com), and Claude integrated into AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI for enterprise deployments. Anthropic also offers Claude for Education and Claude for Government tiers.

Marketing use cases where Claude excels

Claude in marketing is preferred for: long-form content drafting (the writing quality consistently outperforms ChatGPT on first-pass long-form output in most operator surveys), analytical writing (strategy memos, research synthesis, executive briefings — Claude's reasoning capability shows in structured analytical work), technical content (code generation, dbt models, technical documentation), research summaries (Claude handles long-context source documents up to 500K tokens in some tiers — significantly more than ChatGPT's standard context), and computer-use agentic workflows (Claude's Computer Use product enables automated browser tasks that ChatGPT's Operator targets but in different ergonomics).

Claude is also commonly preferred for sensitive use cases — Anthropic's safety-focused training tends to produce more nuanced responses on ambiguous or sensitive prompts, which matters for brands in regulated verticals (financial services, healthcare, legal services) where AI output may need to pass review.

RGM Experts Say

Most marketers' first AI tool is ChatGPT because the brand recognition pulls them in. Our team uses Claude as the workhorse for any output that has to be read by someone — strategy docs, client briefs, content drafts. The writing quality compounds; we ship less unedited AI text than we used to, and the work that does ship reads better. The cost of running multi-LLM is trivial; the productivity uplift is meaningful.

Claude Code and Computer Use — the agentic angle

Claude Computer Use (October 2024) enables Claude to take screenshots of a computer, identify UI elements, and click/type/navigate — automating browser and desktop workflows that previously required RPA tools or custom Selenium scripts. The use cases for marketers: automated competitive monitoring (Claude visits competitor sites, screenshots, summarizes), ad-platform reporting automation (Claude logs into ad managers, extracts data, sends to warehouse), QA automation for landing pages, and customer support workflow augmentation.

Claude Code is the developer-focused agentic product — Claude inside a CLI that can execute commands, edit files, and run tests autonomously. For marketing engineering work (GTM tag templates, BigQuery SQL, dbt models, Looker LookML), Claude Code dramatically compresses development cycles compared to chat-based AI assistance.

API and pricing

Claude API pricing in 2026 (subject to revision): Claude Haiku at approximately $0.25/$1.25 per million input/output tokens (low-cost tier), Claude Sonnet at $3/$15, Claude Opus at $15/$75 for highest-tier reasoning. Volume discounts and prompt caching reduce effective cost meaningfully for repeated-prompt workflows. AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI carry Claude with similar pricing plus the respective cloud-provider's margin.

Enterprise considerations: data sent via API is not used for model training (per Anthropic's API terms); enterprise SLAs, data residency, SSO, and audit logging available via Anthropic Enterprise. Many financial services and healthcare brands route to Claude via AWS Bedrock for the additional cloud-provider compliance posture.

Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini — when to use what

Quick decision framework: use Claude for long-form drafting, analytical writing, long-context source analysis, and Computer-Use agentic workflows. Use ChatGPT for broad ecosystem integrations, image generation via DALL-E, Custom GPTs, and OpenAI's Operator agentic product. Use Gemini for Google Workspace integration, multimodal analysis, and AI Overview citation work. Most serious marketing teams run all three.

Specific to AI search optimization, see our Generative Engine Optimization Ultimate Guide — Claude's search behavior (via the ClaudeBot crawler) is a meaningful but smaller citation source than ChatGPT Search or Google AI Overviews.

RGM Experts Say

Anthropic's pricing is the highest of the three top-tier LLMs at the Opus tier, but the writing quality justifies the premium for output that has to read well. We default the team to Sonnet for daily use, escalate to Opus for high-stakes deliverables, and route long-context research tasks to Claude regardless of tier because the long-context handling outperforms competitors.
