What Amazon SES is

Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a cloud email service from Amazon Web Services (AWS) — infrastructure for sending email at scale, built on the systems Amazon developed to send its own vast volume of mail. Its most common use is transactional email — the automated, one-to-one messages an application sends in response to a user action, such as order confirmations, shipping notices, password resets, and receipts. When your software needs to reliably deliver millions of such messages, SES provides the sending infrastructure and deliverability handling so you do not run your own mail servers. It is a developer-oriented, pay-as-you-go service — you connect an application to it and pay for the volume you send, with no contracts or minimums. Spelling it out matters — SES stands for Simple Email Service, and it is a piece of email plumbing, not a marketing application.

The value SES delivers is reliable, scalable, low-cost email delivery without the burden of running mail infrastructure. Sending large volumes of email reliably — getting past spam filters, handling bounces and complaints, maintaining sender reputation — is genuinely hard, and SES handles that heavy lifting. Because it is priced by usage and integrated with the rest of AWS, it is attractive to teams already building on that cloud who need email sending baked into their applications. But SES is deliberately bare-bones — it is a sending engine, not a full email-marketing platform. It does not, on its own, give you drag-and-drop campaign builders, subscriber list management, sign-up forms, or the polished reporting a marketer expects. That minimalism is the point of the 'Simple' in its name and the key to understanding where it fits.

Amazon SES versus marketing ESPs

The distinction that matters most is between Amazon SES and marketing email service providers (ESPs) like Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or Kit. They can look similar — both send email — but they solve different problems. An ESP is a marketing application built for humans to run campaigns and relationships — audience management, templates and design tools, automations, sign-up forms, segmentation, and analytics, all in an interface a marketer operates. Amazon SES is raw sending infrastructure built for developers to wire into software — it sends the email an application generates, and leaves the campaign tooling, list management, and reporting to you or to another layer. So an ESP is a marketing tool you use; SES is plumbing your application calls. Reaching for SES expecting a campaign builder, or for an ESP expecting cheap raw sending at massive scale, is a category error.

The clearest way to keep them straight is by the kind of email each is built for. Transactional email — triggered by a user action, sent to one person, expected and often essential (a receipt, a reset link) — is SES's home turf, where reliability and scale matter more than design and segmentation. Marketing email — newsletters and promotions sent to a list of subscribers who opted in — is the ESP's domain, where audience management, personalization, deliverability reputation for bulk sending, and unsubscribe handling are central. In practice, many companies use both — an ESP for marketing campaigns and SES (or a similar service) for the transactional stream from their application. Some ESPs are even built on top of underlying sending services. The point is that SES and an ESP are complementary layers, not competitors for the same job — one is infrastructure, the other an application.

Using Amazon SES well

Use Amazon SES for what it is — reliable, scalable transactional and application-generated email. Set up proper authentication (the standards that let receiving servers verify your mail) so your messages are trusted and delivered, monitor bounces and complaints and act on them to protect sending reputation, and separate your transactional stream from any bulk marketing so a problem in one does not poison the other. If you need marketing features — campaigns, lists, templates, segmentation — pair SES with a layer that provides them or use a marketing ESP for that job, rather than trying to bend raw infrastructure into a campaign tool. Respect the same consent and anti-spam law that governs all email — SES is a sending engine, and using it does not exempt you from the rules about who you may mail and how.

The failures come mostly from misusing SES as something it is not. The biggest is expecting it to be a marketing platform — teams choose it for the low price, then discover they must build list management, templates, and reporting themselves, work an ESP would have handled. Another is neglecting deliverability hygiene — skipping authentication or ignoring bounces and complaints — which quietly wrecks sending reputation and lands mail in spam. Some blur transactional and marketing sending on the same reputation, so a marketing misstep damages critical transactional delivery. And a few treat cheap sending as licence to blast unsolicited mail, which is both unlawful and reputationally fatal. Used as disciplined infrastructure for the email an application must reliably send, SES is excellent value; used as a substitute for a marketing platform, it disappoints.

Worked example. An e-commerce application needs to reliably send order confirmations, shipping updates, and password resets to a large and growing customer base, and running its own mail servers is not worth the trouble. The team wires the application to Amazon SES, sets up proper authentication, and monitors bounces and complaints, getting dependable transactional delivery at pay-as-you-go cost. For its newsletters and promotions, though, it uses a separate marketing ESP, because SES has no campaign builder, list management, or subscriber tooling. The lesson is that Amazon Simple Email Service is cloud sending infrastructure built chiefly for transactional email — reliable and cheap at scale — and complements, rather than replaces, a marketing ESP built for campaigns and audiences. (Illustrative; RGM analysis.)
Failure modes to watch. Expecting SES to be a marketing platform and then having to build list management, templates, and reporting yourself; neglecting authentication and bounce or complaint handling and wrecking sending reputation; blending transactional and marketing sending on one reputation; and treating cheap sending as licence to blast unsolicited mail.

Common questions

What is Amazon SES?
Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is an AWS cloud service for sending email at scale, used chiefly for transactional messages like order confirmations, shipping notices, and password resets, priced pay-as-you-go by volume.
How is Amazon SES different from a marketing ESP?
An ESP like Mailchimp is a marketing application with campaign builders, list management, and analytics for humans to run. Amazon SES is raw sending infrastructure for developers to wire into software — it sends the email an application generates and leaves campaign tooling to you.
Is Amazon SES for marketing or transactional email?
Chiefly transactional — the automated, one-to-one messages an application sends after a user action, where reliability and scale matter most. Marketing campaigns to subscriber lists are better served by an ESP, and many companies use both together.
