Definition in plain terms
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that AI-powered answer engines — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others — surface and CITE it when generating an answer. Where traditional SEO aims to rank a link highly, AEO aims for the content to BE the answer the engine gives, or the source it credits, because in an answer-first interface the cited source captures the attention a ranked link used to.
The mechanics
AEO builds on SEO fundamentals but reweights them for machine reading and synthesis — clear, direct answers near the top of a page; well-structured content (headings, lists, concise definitions) that is easy to extract; genuine authority and trustworthiness signals the engines lean on; factual accuracy and citable specifics; and structured data where it helps. The shift in mindset is from 'rank for the keyword' to 'be the most quotable, trustworthy answer to the question' — which rewards depth, clarity, and credibility over keyword density. It overlaps heavily with strong SEO, since both reward authoritative, well-organized content.
When it matters
AEO matters wherever AI answer engines intercept the queries a business cares about — increasingly, a large share of informational search. It is most valuable for brands that win on expertise and trust, since those are exactly the signals engines use to choose what to cite. The honest caveats are that the field is new and the engines are opaque and changing, so AEO is directional rather than precise, and that being cited does not always mean a click — so the value is partly brand presence inside the answer, not just referral traffic, and should be measured accordingly.
