What a cross-chain bridge is
A cross-chain bridge, or crypto bridge, is a protocol that connects two otherwise-separate blockchains so that tokens or data can move between them. Blockchains are isolated by design — an asset native to Ethereum cannot natively exist on a different chain — so a bridge creates the link. The most common mechanism is lock-and-mint: you deposit an asset into the bridge's contract on the source chain, where it is locked, and the bridge mints an equivalent wrapped token on the destination chain that stands in for it. To return, the wrapped token is burned and the original is released. Some bridges instead use liquidity pools on each side, or a network of validators that attest to deposits, but the goal is the same — let value or messages cross a boundary blockchains do not natively cross.
Bridges exist because the ecosystem is fragmented across many chains and layer-two networks, each with its own apps, fees, and speeds. Users bridge to reach cheaper transactions, to use an app that lives on another chain, or to move a stablecoin where it is needed. Many bridges rely on a small set of validators or multisignature keys to approve transfers, so compromising a few private keys can authorize fraudulent withdrawals without breaking any contract at all. Historic losses run into the hundreds of millions per incident, and bridges have repeatedly ranked among the largest sources of stolen funds.
It is worth distinguishing the risks so they are not blurred together. Smart-contract bugs let attackers exploit flawed code to forge or over-mint. Validator or key compromise lets attackers sign valid-looking transfers. And centralization means a single point of failure can unravel the whole bridge across every chain it serves. Some designs — trust-minimized bridges that verify proofs on-chain rather than trusting a signer set — reduce specific risks, but none removes them. Because the asset you receive is a wrapped claim on locked collateral, its value also depends on that collateral staying secure. Treat any bridge as a risk surface, not a neutral pipe. If you must bridge, the sober approach is to minimize exposure. The failure modes reflect the risks. Assuming a bridge is a safe, neutral pipe ignores that bridges are among the most exploited targets in the space. Holding large positions in wrapped tokens concentrates exactly the value attackers want. Trusting an unaudited or brand-new bridge, or one governed by a few keys, raises the odds of loss. And confusing a wrapped token with the underlying native asset misses that its safety depends entirely on the bridge.
