Definition in plain terms
A content calendar (or editorial calendar) is a schedule that lays out what content will be published, on which channels, and when. It turns a content plan into concrete, dated commitments — this article next Tuesday, that video the following week — so production stays consistent and nothing falls through the cracks.
The mechanics
A useful calendar tracks each piece's topic, format, owner, channel, status, and publish date, and ideally ties each item back to a goal or campaign. It coordinates writers, designers, and reviewers, smooths workload, and prevents both gaps and last-minute scrambles. Tools range from a spreadsheet to dedicated software.
When it matters
A content calendar matters once more than one person creates content or once consistency matters (and it usually does — sporadic publishing kills momentum). But it's a tool, not a strategy: a full calendar of aimless content is still aimless. It executes a content strategy; it doesn't replace one.
