An order effect is a distortion in research and testing that happens when the sequence in which items appear changes how people respond to them. The item itself does not change; only its position does. Ask people to rate three ads and the one shown first often gets a different score than it would in third place. Put a hard survey question after an easy one and answers shift. Run two versions of a checkout flow back to back and the second reading carries traces of the first. Because the effect rides on position rather than content, it quietly contaminates conclusions — you think you are measuring the item, but you are partly measuring where it sat in the line. Anywhere order is not fixed by the real world — surveys, taste tests, usability sessions, within-subject experiments — order effects can creep in.
Order effects come in recognizable shapes. Primacy means early items get extra weight because attention is fresh; recency means the last item lingers in memory and dominates. Fatigue drags down later answers as respondents tire; practice lifts them as people learn the task. Anchoring ties a later judgment to an earlier number. A marketer running a concept test feels all of this: the first creative sets a mental yardstick, the fifth gets a rushed rating, and the winner may simply be the one lucky enough to appear when respondents were sharpest. The danger is treating the result as a clean read on the creative when it is partly a read on scheduling. Naming the specific order effect at work — primacy, recency, fatigue, practice — is the first step to designing it out rather than shipping a decision built on an artifact.
Order effect versus carryover effect
It helps to separate an order effect from its close relative, the carryover effect, because people use the terms loosely. An order effect is the broad phenomenon — any way that the position of an item in a sequence changes the response to it. A carryover effect is one specific cause of order effects — the lingering influence of a previous condition on the one that follows. If a strong sample in a taste test dulls the palate so the next sample scores low, that is carryover. If a demanding survey block leaves respondents impatient for the next block, that is carryover too. So every carryover effect produces an order effect, but not every order effect is carryover — primacy and simple fatigue shift responses by position without any specific prior treatment bleeding forward into the next one.
The distinction is practical, not academic. If your problem is pure position bias — the first option always wins attention — randomizing or rotating order across respondents usually fixes it. If your problem is carryover, rotation alone may not be enough, because the residue of one heavy condition can outlast a single reordering; you may need washout gaps between conditions, a between-subjects design, or lighter tasks. Diagnosing which you have changes the remedy. A B2B software team testing two onboarding flows in one session risks carryover: the first flow teaches the user, so the second looks easier no matter its design. A survey rotating five product claims risks plain primacy. Same family, different fix, and mislabeling the two leads teams to apply a control that never addresses the real mechanism at work.
Controlling order effects
The standard defense against order effects is counterbalancing — deliberately varying the sequence so that, across the whole sample, every item appears in every position about equally often. Full counterbalancing runs all possible orders; with many items that explodes, so researchers use a Latin square or simply randomize the order per respondent, which spreads position bias evenly rather than letting it pile onto one item. Randomization is the everyday tool: most survey platforms can shuffle question and answer order automatically, and any concept test should rotate the stimuli. The goal is not to eliminate the effect on any single response — you cannot — but to keep it from systematically favoring one item, so that when you average across respondents the position bias cancels out and the real differences between items survive to be read.
Counterbalancing is not the only lever. You can shorten instruments to cut fatigue, insert breaks or washout periods to reduce carryover, keep the wording of scales constant, and prefer between-subjects designs when carryover is severe enough that no reordering cleans it up. You should also test for order effects rather than assume they are gone: if you logged the sequence each respondent saw, you can check whether position predicts the score, and a strong relationship is a warning. The failure mode is running a within-subject test with a fixed order, then reading the result as if position played no part. Fix the order in your study only when the world fixes it; otherwise vary it on purpose, and treat any result from an unvaried sequence as suspect until proven otherwise.
