What a power law is

A power-law distribution describes situations where a small number of cases are enormously bigger than the rest — the shape of a world ruled by its extremes. Formally, the frequency of a value falls off as a power of its size, which means the distribution has a 'heavy tail': very large values are rare but far more common than a normal bell curve would allow. The everyday face of a power law is the 80/20 rule, or Pareto principle — the rough observation that a large share of effects comes from a small share of causes. Twenty percent of customers may drive eighty percent of revenue; a handful of blog posts pull most of the traffic; a few products account for the bulk of sales. In content and SEO, that can mean investing in the small set of pages capable of becoming hits while treating the tail as cheap, aggregate coverage. In customer management, it means recognizing that a minority of accounts may carry the business and building retention around them. In analytics, it means leading with medians and percentiles rather than means, and reporting the top decile on its own. The heavy tail also argues for portfolio thinking in bets where success is a power law — many small tries, since you cannot predict which few will explode, and the winners more than pay for the misses.

The failures come from treating a power-law world as a normal one. People report the mean and plan around a 'typical' case that does not exist, then are ambushed by the extremes. They spread effort evenly across the long tail instead of concentrating it on the head that actually matters. They dismiss rare, high-impact events as flukes until one reshapes the quarter. And they over-invest in predicting which specific item will be the hit, when the honest move in a heavy-tailed domain is to take many shots and back the winners once they emerge. The discipline is to recognize the shape first, then let it drive the plan: prioritize the vital few, describe the distribution honestly with percentiles, prepare for extremes rather than ignoring them, and use portfolio bets where you cannot foresee which case will dominate. Worked example. An e-commerce team pulls its revenue by customer and expects a tidy cluster around an average order value. Instead, the chart is a power law: a small group of high-frequency buyers accounts for most of the revenue, while a long tail spends very little. Planning around the 'average customer' would have missed both the whales that carry the business and the thin tail that flatters the mean. So the team switches to medians and top-decile reporting, builds a retention program around its best customers, and stops treating the tail as if it behaved like the head.
