What primary colors are
Primary colors are the base colors from which all other colors in a given system are mixed, and which cannot themselves be made by mixing the others in that system. The catch, and it surprises people, is that there is no single, universal trio. Which three colors are primary depends entirely on how the color is being produced. Mixing pigments works differently from mixing light, which works differently again from layering printing inks, so each has its own primaries. The one constant is the role. Primaries are the starting points, the colors you combine to reach everything else. Secondary colors are made by mixing two primaries, and tertiaries by mixing a primary with a neighboring secondary. So primary is a position in a mixing system, not a fixed, God-given property of a particular color.
The reason the set changes is physics. Some color comes from light being emitted, such as a phone screen glowing, and some comes from light being absorbed and reflected, as when paint soaks up part of the spectrum and bounces the rest to your eye. Emitted light mixes additively, so pile colors on and you approach white. Pigments and inks mix subtractively, so layer them and you approach black, because each one removes more of the spectrum. Because addition and subtraction of light behave oppositely, the base colors that most efficiently generate a full range differ between them. That is why the primaries you learned finger-painting are not the primaries a designer sets in software, and why insisting on one true set of primaries misunderstands what a primary even is.
RYB, RGB, and CMYK — three different sets
Three systems dominate, each with its own primaries. RYB, red, yellow, and blue, is the traditional artists' model taught in school, a subtractive scheme for mixing paints and pigments, and mixing its primaries heads toward a muddy dark. It is intuitive and historically important but not how modern screens or presses work. RGB, red, green, and blue, is the additive model of light, the primaries of anything that emits its own glow, and the subject of its own entry. CMYK, cyan, magenta, yellow, and a key black, is the subtractive model of process printing, whose primaries are chosen to absorb light efficiently so inks on white paper can reproduce a wide range. Same word, primary, three different trios, because each medium generates color a genuinely different way.
The practical upshot is that the right primaries depend on where the color will live. Design a logo on screen and you are working in RGB, where red, green, and blue light combine additively and pure, saturated brightness is easy. Send that same logo to a printer and it is separated into CMYK inks, which mix subtractively and simply cannot reproduce some of the most vivid RGB colors, which is why a glowing screen blue can dull on paper. Artists mixing paint reason in something like RYB. None of these is more correct than the others, because each is the base set for its medium. Confusing them, expecting print to match screen exactly, or expecting RYB intuition to predict RGB mixing, is where color surprises come from.
Choosing and using primaries in branding
In branding, primary colors carry a second, looser meaning worth separating from the technical one, the main colors of a brand's palette, its dominant identity colors, as opposed to secondary accent colors. A brand's primary color in this sense is the hue people associate with it on sight. When you build such a palette, you still cannot escape the technical systems. You specify the color once and reproduce it across media, defining it in RGB and hex for screens, in CMYK for print, and often as a fixed spot color so it stays consistent everywhere. Getting a single brand color to look the same on a phone, a poster, and a painted sign is precisely the work of translating between color systems whose primaries differ, and it rewards care up front.
The failures come from forgetting that primaries are context-bound. Teams assume the red-yellow-blue wheel from childhood governs screen or print mixing, and are baffled when it does not. They design vivid RGB colors and are disappointed when print cannot match them, because CMYK's range is smaller. They specify a brand color in one system only, then watch it drift across media for lack of proper conversions. And they conflate primary as a mixing base with primary as a brand's headline color, talking past each other. The discipline is to know which system you are in, define brand colors in every system they will appear in, and treat the childhood RYB wheel as one useful model among several rather than the single law of color.
