Site infrastructure for search.

Definition in plain terms

Technical SEO is the work of making a website's infrastructure friendly to search engines — so they can crawl its pages, render them correctly, and index them. It's the layer beneath content and links: site speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability, indexation, structured data, and a clean site architecture.

The mechanics

It covers things like XML sitemaps and robots rules, fast load times and Core Web Vitals, mobile rendering, HTTPS, canonical tags to manage duplicates, fixing crawl errors and broken links, and a logical URL structure. Most of it is invisible to visitors but decisive for whether engines can access and trust the site at all.

When it matters

Technical SEO matters because it's the foundation: a site with brilliant content and strong links still fails if engines can't crawl or index it. It matters most at scale (large sites with crawl-budget and duplication issues) and after migrations, where a single misconfiguration can hide an entire section from search.

Worked example. A large store publishes great content but traffic is flat. An audit finds a stray rule in robots.txt blocking the whole product directory, so engines never crawled it. Removing one line lets thousands of pages get indexed, and organic traffic climbs — no new content needed. The bottleneck was technical, not editorial.
Failure modes to watch. Chasing content and links while a crawl or indexation bug hides whole sections; accidental noindex or robots blocks after a migration; ignoring site speed and mobile rendering; and letting duplicate URLs dilute signals without canonicals.
