title tag · noun
  1. A title tag is the HTML title element that names a page, which search engines use as the clickable headline in results and browsers show on the tab. "Rewrite the title tag to lead with the keyword and the brand."

What a title tag is

A title tag is the HTML element — written as in the head of a page — that gives the page its name. It does not appear in the body of the page itself, where a visitor reads. Instead it surfaces in three places: as the clickable blue headline of a search result, as the label on a browser tab, and as the default text when someone bookmarks or shares the page. That makes the title tag one of the most consequential few words on any page, because for many people it is the very first thing they read about you, often before they decide whether to click at all. Search engines have long treated the title as a strong relevance signal — the words you put there tell them, plainly, what the page is about — so it serves the algorithm and the human reader at the same time.</p><p>A useful title tag does two jobs without straining. It states what the page is, using the language a searcher would actually type, and it gives a reason to click rather than scroll past. Google typically displays roughly the first fifty to sixty characters before truncating with an ellipsis, so the important words belong near the front. One caution worth stating plainly: the title tag you write is not always the title Google shows. Since 2021 Google has openly rewritten titles when it judges yours unhelpful — too long, keyword-stuffed, repetitive, or empty — sometimes pulling text from your H1 or on-page headings instead. Writing a clear, honest, well-sized title is the surest way to keep the one you intended.</p></div> <h2>Title tag versus meta description and H1</h2> <div class="answer-card"><p>Three elements are easy to confuse, and each has a distinct job. The title tag is the headline — the clickable link text in results and the tab label — and it carries direct ranking weight. The meta description is the short paragraph of summary text beneath that headline; it is not a ranking factor, and its purpose is to win the click by promising what the page delivers. The H1 is the main heading inside the visible page, the large words a reader sees once they arrive. The title tag and the H1 often say similar things, and they can be identical, but they need not be: the title is optimized for the results page and a tighter character budget, while the H1 can be longer, warmer, and written for someone already on the page.</p><p>Keeping the three aligned but not identical is the craft. A common pattern is a keyword-led, brand-suffixed title tag, a slightly fuller H1 that reads naturally as a page heading, and a meta description that expands on both with a clear value proposition. Repeating the exact same string across all three wastes the chance to reinforce relevance with varied, related language, and an over-optimized title that crams the keyword three times is exactly the kind Google now rewrites. Think of the title as the promise made on the results page, the H1 as the promise restated to the reader who clicked, and the meta description as the supporting argument between them — complementary roles, not duplicates.</p></div> <h2>Writing title tags well</h2> <div class="answer-card"><p>Write each title tag for one page and one intent. Lead with the primary keyword or the clearest description of the content, because the front of the title weighs most for both ranking and the eye, then add the brand name, usually at the end, separated by a pipe or a dash. Keep it within roughly sixty characters so it is not cut off, make every title on the site unique so pages do not compete or look duplicated, and write in plain, specific language that matches what the page truly offers. Where it fits naturally, a number, a year, or a concrete benefit can lift the click-through rate without dishonesty. Match the title to the query intent — an informational guide and a product page deserve different phrasings even on the same topic.</p><p>The failure modes are well worn. Duplicate titles across many pages confuse engines about which to rank. Titles that are far too long get truncated, hiding the payoff. Keyword stuffing — repeating the term until the title reads like a list — invites a Google rewrite and repels readers. Generic boilerplate such as "Home" or "Untitled" wastes the slot entirely. And a title that oversells, promising more than the page gives, earns the click but loses the trust, raising bounce and dragging performance down. The remedy is steady and unglamorous: one clear, honest, unique, well-sized title per page, keyword near the front, brand at the back, written to be read by a person and parsed by a machine.</p></div> <div class="example"><strong>Worked example.</strong> A guide to choosing a mattress sits under the title "Mattress Guide" — vague, generic, and shared by three other pages on the same site. It barely ranks, and the few searchers who see it scroll past. The team rewrites it to "How to Choose a Mattress — Sizes, Firmness & Tips | Acme", leading with the searcher's actual question, naming the specifics, and ending with the brand. The headline now states the page's substance and gives a reason to click, and the rewrite stops competing with the site's other titles. Click-through and ranking both improve. The lesson: a title tag is the page's clickable headline and a relevance signal, so lead with the keyword, stay under sixty characters, and make it unique. (Illustrative; RGM analysis.)</div> <div class="anti"><strong>Failure modes to watch.</strong> Duplicate titles across pages that compete with each other; titles too long to display fully; keyword stuffing that triggers a Google rewrite; generic boilerplate like "Home" or "Untitled"; and titles that oversell what the page delivers, winning the click but losing trust.</div> <h2>Synonyms & antonyms</h2> <div class="card"><div class="cols"><div><h3>Synonyms</h3><div class="chips"><span class="chip">title element</span><span class="chip">page title</span><span class="chip">SEO title</span></div></div><div><h3>Antonyms</h3><div class="chips"><span class="chip ant">meta description</span><span class="chip ant">H1 heading</span></div></div></div></div> <h2>Origin & history</h2> <div class="answer-card"><p>Title tag — the HTML title element — sets the clickable headline in search results and the browser-tab label, carrying both ranking weight and click appeal in roughly sixty characters.</p><p style="font-size:13px;color:var(--mut);margin-top:8px">Etymology: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML_element" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" style="color:var(--cyan);text-decoration:none">source</a>.</p></div> <h2>Usage trends</h2> <div class="answer-card"><p style="margin-bottom:10px">Search interest for this term over the last five years:</p><div class="trends-embed"><script type="text/javascript" src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/trends_nrtr/3700_RC01/embed_loader.js"></script><script type="text/javascript">try{trends.embed.renderExploreWidget("TIMESERIES",{"comparisonItem": [{"keyword": "title tag", "geo": "", "time": "today 5-y"}], "category": 0, "property": ""},{"exploreQuery": "q=title%20tag&date=today%205-y", "guestPath": "https://trends.google.com:443/trends/embed/"});}catch(e){}</script></div><p style="margin:10px 0 0"><a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=title%20tag&date=today%205-y" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">View interest-over-time on Google Trends →</a></p></div> <h2>Common questions</h2> <dl class="qa-block"><dt>What is a title tag used for?</dt><dd>It names a page in HTML and appears as the clickable headline in search results and the browser tab label.
