Brooklinen: kickstarter to $200m+ bedding brand

Brooklinen launched on Kickstarter, built a $200M+ DTC bedding brand on aggressive paid social, and expanded into a multi-category lifestyle brand.

Founded: 2014
Vertical: Home / DTC / Bedding
Primary channels: Paid Social + Kickstarter + Influencer + Retail

The founding and history

Brooklinen was founded in 2014 by Rich and Vicki Fulop in Brooklyn. The founding insight: luxury hotel-quality bedding (300+ thread count, percale and sateen weaves, long-staple cotton) was sold at $300-$800+ price points in retail (Frette, Sferra, Pratesi), while the actual cost of producing comparable sheets was a fraction of that — the markup reflected retail distribution costs rather than product quality.[1]

The brand launched via Kickstarter in March 2014, raising $236,000 from 1,800+ backers — at the time one of the most-successful home-goods Kickstarters. The campaign provided initial revenue, customer email list, and proof-of-concept for the DTC bedding model.[2]

The playbook executed

Brooklinen's marketing leveraged Facebook DR (pre-ATT economics worked exceptionally well for bedding — high-AOV, relatively simple decision, repeat-purchase potential), influencer seeding (lifestyle and home-design creators on Instagram), and PR amplification (Brooklinen was widely covered in lifestyle press from launch).

Category expansion followed: original sheets, then bath linens, then loungewear and pajamas, then expansion into furniture and home decor. Each category leveraged the existing brand and customer relationship; the LTV expansion compounded over time.[3]

The results

Brooklinen reached an estimated $200M+ in annual revenue by 2023 with expansion into retail (the Vermont flagship store and pop-up activations) and continued category expansion.[4] The brand remained private and founder-controlled through 2024-2025.

What this case study teaches

  • Kickstarter validates DTC concept and seeds email list — Brooklinen's launch leveraged $236K + 1,800 customers from day one.
  • Premium-quality at accessible pricing is a defensible DTC positioning — luxury hotel sheets at hotel-cost pricing.
  • Category expansion compounds customer relationships — bath, loungewear, furniture leveraged existing customer base.
  • Influencer seeding at scale builds brand without celebrity spend — lifestyle creators provided category-relevant exposure.
  • Husband-wife founder teams can scale DTC operations — Rich and Vicki Fulop divided product/marketing/ops well.
