Chipotle GuacDance: branded hashtag challenge drove record guacamole sales
Chipotle's #GuacDance TikTok hashtag challenge in 2019 generated 250K+ video submissions, 430M views, and a record guacamole sales day — the canonical CPG TikTok activation.
The founding and history
Chipotle launched the #GuacDance TikTok branded hashtag challenge on July 29, 2019, timed to National Avocado Day. The activation paired with influencer Brent Rivera (a top TikTok creator at the time) who produced a choreographed dance to a Dr. Jean song called 'Guacamole Song.'[1] The mechanic: TikTok users could film themselves doing the GuacDance and post with the #GuacDance hashtag, with the most-engaged videos appearing in Chipotle's owned-channel rotation.
The activation paired with a customer offer: free guacamole with any entree on July 31, 2019. The combination of cultural participation (the dance challenge) and tangible incentive (free guac) drove both digital engagement and in-store visits.
The playbook executed
The campaign generated 430M+ video views on TikTok over six days. Approximately 250,000+ user-generated videos used the #GuacDance hashtag — making it one of TikTok's most-viewed branded hashtag challenges at the time.[2]
More importantly for Chipotle, the in-store activation drove the most guacamole sales in a single day in company history (Chipotle's CMO Chris Brandt confirmed this publicly). The campaign demonstrated the funnel from TikTok branded engagement to physical-location sales — a measurement chain that was previously hard to credibly establish.
The results
The Chipotle GuacDance activation became the canonical case study for TikTok branded hashtag challenges and influenced how virtually every major QSR brand approached TikTok activation. Chipotle continued investing in TikTok-led marketing through 2020-2025 with sustained creator partnerships and challenge activations.
What this case study teaches
- Branded hashtag challenges convert at scale when paired with incentives — the free-guac incentive turned digital engagement into store visits.
- Authentic creator pairing is structural to TikTok activation success — Brent Rivera's involvement gave the challenge credibility within TikTok culture.
- Time-bound activations create urgency — National Avocado Day timing was important.
- TikTok-to-store measurement is achievable — Chipotle's record-day claim demonstrated the funnel.
- QSR is unusually well-suited to TikTok — visual food content + impulse-purchase economics + viral incentives compound.
