Reformation: sustainable fashion at fashion-forward scale

Reformation built a $500M+ fashion brand around sustainability transparency and Instagram-driven aesthetic — defining how Gen-Z and millennials buy clothing.

Founded: 2009
Vertical: Apparel / Fashion / Sustainable
Primary channels: Instagram + Stores + Sustainability Storytelling

The founding and history

Reformation was founded in 2009 by Yael Aflalo in Los Angeles. The brand started as a vintage clothing retailer and evolved into a fashion-forward sustainable label. The defining positioning: 'Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We're #2.' — irreverent sustainability messaging paired with fashion-forward design.[1]

Reformation's RefScale per-product sustainability footprint (showing pounds of CO2, gallons of water, and pounds of waste saved compared to industry-average production) became the brand's transparency mechanism. The footprint data was prominently displayed on product pages, making sustainability a measurable rather than aspirational positioning.[2]

The playbook executed

Marketing leaned heavily on Instagram. Reformation's product styling, photography, and brand voice produced highly-shareable visual content; the brand became one of the most-tagged fashion brands on Instagram during 2015-2020. Celebrity wearings (Taylor Swift, Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber, Zoe Kravitz) amplified the brand without paid endorsement deals.[3]

Retail expansion paired with the digital-led brand: Reformation stores in Los Angeles, NYC, San Francisco, London, and other major cities created physical brand experiences. The stores reinforced the brand aesthetic and provided trial that drove subsequent online purchases.

The results

Private equity firm Permira acquired a majority stake in Reformation in March 2019. The brand has continued growing under Permira ownership; by 2024 estimated annual revenue exceeded $500M with international presence and ongoing sustainability investment.[4]

What this case study teaches

  • Sustainability transparency requires measurement infrastructure — RefScale per-product footprints made sustainability concrete.
  • Irreverent brand voice differentiates sustainable fashion — Reformation's tone avoided the 'preachy' problem most sustainability brands face.
  • Instagram aesthetic is structural to Gen-Z fashion — Reformation's shareable visual content drove organic spread.
  • Celebrity wearings without paid endorsements compound brand value — Reformation's authentic celebrity adoption was meaningful.
  • Retail amplifies digital brands — physical stores reinforced the brand experience.
