We reach for this calculator at the start of an ASO engagement, in the meeting where a team is deciding whether the store listing is worth serious attention or just a quarterly touch-up. The number it returns reframes the conversation: a listing that converts at 3% instead of 2.5% is not a cosmetic upgrade — on a few hundred thousand monthly impressions it is thousands of extra installs a month, most of them organic and free, plus a quietly lower cost on every paid install you were already buying.

The point we make with it is that conversion is the highest-leverage half of ASO. Keyword work earns you more impressions; conversion work earns more from every impression you will ever get, forever. That is why we push clients to fix the icon, the first two screenshots, and the title before chasing another backend keyword. The tool makes the trade visible: it shows the free organic installs that a CVR lift unlocks alongside the paid efficiency, so nobody argues that ASO is “just cosmetic.”

Two cautions. First, the lift input is a hypothesis, not a result — the only honest way to know your real lift is a store experiment (custom product pages on the App Store, store listing experiments on Google Play), so we use the estimate to justify the test, then replace it with the measured number. Second, be precise about paid share: the higher it is, the more of the value shows up as CPI reduction; the lower it is, the more shows up as free organic installs. Either way the listing pays for itself — the calculator just tells you in which currency.

The math

How it works

The model is deliberately simple, because the leverage is simple: your product page is shown to everyone, so improving its conversion rate improves every impression at once. Start with installs today:

Baseline installs = Impressions × CVR

A relative conversion lift L raises the rate to CVR × (1 + L). The extra installs it creates:

Extra installs = Impressions × CVR × L

The share of those extra installs that are organic — earned with no media cost — is the non-paid share of impressions:

Free organic installs = Impressions × (1 − PaidShare) × CVR × L

On the paid side, a higher conversion rate means the same budget buys more installs, so effective cost per install falls by the lift:

Effective paid CPI = CPI ÷ (1 + L)

And blended across paid and organic, where blended CPI today is PaidShare × CPI (paid spend spread over all installs):

Effective blended CPI = ( PaidShare × CPI ) ÷ (1 + L)
  • Impressions — monthly times your listing is shown. CVR — installs ÷ impressions today. L — relative conversion lift (0.20 for +20%).
  • PaidShare — fraction of impressions from paid user acquisition. CPI — blended paid cost per install today.
  • The media-equivalent value of the free organic installs is those installs valued at your CPI — the media you would otherwise have to buy to get them.

Conversion rate is defined as downloads relative to impressions by both Apple App Analytics and Google Play Console. The compounding-across-impressions framing and the figures here are RGM analysis, illustrative — prove your real lift with a store experiment.

Why it matters

Why conversion is the compounding half of ASO

Most ASO effort goes into keywords, because rank feels like the goal. But rank only earns you an impression — the install is still won or lost on the product page. And unlike a keyword win, which helps one query, a conversion win helps every query, every browse, and every paid click, at once and from now on. That is what compounding means here: the same improvement pays out across all future traffic.

It also quietly fixes your paid economics. If you run Apple Search Ads or Google App campaigns, every visitor those ads send lands on the same product page. Lift its conversion rate and each ad dollar buys more installs — your effective cost per install drops without touching a bid. So the store listing is the rare lever that improves paid and organic performance simultaneously, which is why we treat it as a landing page, not a form to fill in.

Read your own conversion rate first

There is no single “good” app store conversion rate — it swings by category, store, and traffic source. Two cautions: a branded search converts far higher than discovery browse, and the App Store and Google Play report the funnel differently. Use these as sanity checks, not targets; your own App Analytics or Play Console baseline is the only number that matters.
