Ratings and Reviews Strategy
Affects rankings, conversion, featuring. Generation, prompt timing, response, negative handling, automation.
Why this matters
Ratings affect ASO rankings, conversion rates, and editorial featuring. A 4.5+ rating is now the bar for competitive categories. Strategic review generation is a distinct ASO capability.
How ratings affect ASO
- Direct ranking factor.
- Conversion rate (users see rating before installing).
- Editorial featuring eligibility.
- Word-of-mouth amplification.
Review generation
- Native rating prompt (Apple SKStoreReviewController, Google In-App Review API).
- Custom prompts (must be optional, comply with store policies).
- Email post-engagement reminders.
- Push notifications (sparingly).
- Customer support flow (after positive resolution).
- NEVER incentivize reviews.
Prompt timing
- After value delivered (key activation moment).
- After positive user signal (5+ sessions, completed task).
- NOT immediately on app open.
- NOT after errors or negative experiences.
- Native rate-limited by Apple/Google (3 prompts per year).
Review response
- Respond to all reviews under 3 stars.
- Respond to top reviews (build community).
- Personalized, not template.
- Acknowledge specific issue.
- Offer support contact when issue actionable.
- Update if issue resolved in subsequent version.
Handling negative
- Pattern analysis: what's the common complaint?
- Product team feedback loop.
- Support team alerted to viral issues.
- Public response thoughtful.
- Update notes reference resolved issues.
- Rating recovery: positive prompt strategy after fix.
Automation
- AppFollow, Appbot, Sensor Tower for review monitoring.
- Sentiment analysis.
- Alert routing to product/CX/marketing.
- Response templates per category.
- Translation for international reviews.
Advanced playbook
- Native rating prompts in-app at value moments.
- Multi-touch review acquisition (email + push + in-app).
- NPS or in-app survey before public prompt (capture detractors privately).
- Negative review pattern review weekly.
- Product roadmap informed by review themes.
- Localized review response.
- Rating goal setting (4.5+ minimum).
- Editorial outreach when rating strong.
