TrueView and Skippable Strategy
Skippable strategy. Mechanics, first-5-second rule, storytelling, sequencing, non-skippable, bumpers.
Why skippable matters
Skippable TrueView ads are YouTube's flagship format. Users skip 70–80% on average. Strategy must work whether users skip (brand impression) or watch (deeper engagement).
Mechanics
- 5-second skip available.
- Pay if user watches 30 seconds or to end (whichever first), or clicks.
- If user skips before 30s, no charge.
- Built-in performance/brand alignment.
First 5 seconds
- Brand reveal early.
- Hook viewer to stay.
- Value proposition or curiosity gap.
- Visual interest.
- Captions visible.
- If they skip, you got the brand impression at no cost.
Storytelling
- 3-act structure compressed.
- Problem → agitation → resolution.
- Direct response patterns work.
- Brand storytelling within 30 seconds.
- Pay-only-if-watched aligns brand-performance incentives.
Sequencing
- Awareness video first, then consideration, then conversion.
- Custom audiences from prior view stages.
- Ad sequencing campaigns automate.
- Frequency capped per stage.
Non-skippable
- 15 seconds.
- Must complete; higher CPM.
- Reach-focused.
- Less flexible than skippable.
- Use for brand campaigns where completion matters.
Bumper ads
- 6 seconds non-skippable.
- Awareness and frequency.
- Brand reinforcement at low cost.
- Burst strategy: 3–5 bumpers across week.
- Hard to tell story; brand recall focus.
Advanced playbook
- Sequential storytelling across format types.
- Hook variations tested.
- Custom audiences from prior view stages.
- Ad sequencing campaigns.
- Brand lift studies validate.
- Frequency capping per audience.
- Creative library with performance tagging.
- Annual creative strategy review.
- Cross-screen consistency.
- Connected to broader video strategy.
Common mistakes
- Slow opening; viewers skip.
- Brand reveal in final 5 seconds; users skip first.
- Single creative without variants.
- No captions.
- Frequency uncontrolled; saturation.
- Skippable used like non-skippable; pacing mismatched.
- No sequenced messaging.
- Brand lift not validated.
- Mobile not native.
- CTV vs mobile creative same.
